The Cook/Baker position available with Garrard County Schools is a contract role requiring 6 hours of work per day over 180 days in the school year, offering health benefits as part of the package. Reporting directly to the Director of Food Service, this position is classified as non-exempt. The role involves preparing, cooking, baking, and serving a variety of foods in quantity at an assigned school site. The Cook/Baker will prepare baked goods including rolls, biscuits, breads, cakes, and cookies, as well as meat dishes, vegetables, salads, sandwiches, soups, and sauces. The position also requires adjusting recipes to meet food quantity and nutritional quality standards, monitoring food temperatures to ensure safety and compliance, and maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in kitchen facilities and equipment. Additionally, this role involves assisting in inventory, record-keeping, operating kitchen and cafeteria equipment, and training and providing work direction to other food service staff. The person in this role must demonstrate strong knowledge of quantity food service principles, sanitation and safety practices, recipe preparation and adjustments, and kitchen equipment operation. Physical demands include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks that require standing, bending, and reaching throughout the workday. Candidates should have at minimum a high school diploma or G.E.D., with at least one year of experience cooking and baking large quantities of food in a commercial or institutional setting. All employees must complete a certification training course prescribed by Kentucky regulations for school food personnel. Successful applicants will be essential contributors to the school’s mission by delivering nutritious, appealing meals that enhance the learning environment and support student health.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • one year experience in cooking and baking food in large quantities
  • completion of training course for certification of beginning school food personnel as prescribed in 702 KAR 6:045
  • ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weights up to 50 pounds
  • ability to stand, bend, reach and perform physical tasks
  • ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing
  • ability to use hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • one year experience in cooking and baking food in large quantities
  • knowledge of principles and methods of quantity food service preparation, serving and storage
  • familiarity with sanitation and safety practices related to handling, cooking, baking and serving food
  • ability to prepare and serve food in accordance with health and sanitation regulations
  • competency in operating and maintaining standard kitchen equipment
  • ability to prepare attractive, appetizing and nutritious meals
  • basic math and cashiering skills
  • basic record-keeping techniques
  • good communication skills both oral and written
  • ability to lift medium weights up to 50 pounds

Job Duties

  • Prepare and bake rolls, biscuits, breads, cakes, cookies and other baked goods
  • prepare and combine necessary ingredients
  • prepare and cook meat dishes, vegetables and other main dishes
  • prepare salads, sandwiches, fruit, soups, sauces and other foods
  • assist in determining appropriate quantity of food items for cooking and baking
  • adjust and extend recipes as needed
  • maintain food quality standards including appearance and nutritional requirements
  • monitor temperatures of food to assure safety and quality standards are met
  • monitor water temperatures to assure proper temperature for sanitizing
  • serve food according to established guidelines and replenish serving containers as needed
  • serve and sell lunch items to faculty
  • clean cafeteria equipment, utensils and appliances and store food supplies
  • assure compliance with kitchen sanitation and safety procedures and regulations
  • clean refrigerators and storerooms as required
  • assist in storing unused food and supplies
  • dispose of unusable leftovers
  • utilize proper methods of handling foods to be stored
  • operate a variety of standard kitchen utensils and equipment including slicer, chopper, mixer, steamer, fryer, dishwasher, electric warmer, range, oven, pressure cooker, cash register and other cafeteria equipment as required
  • train and provide work direction to others
  • record amounts of food sold and monies collected as assigned
  • assist with inventory and maintain routine records as directed
  • prepare records of foods cooked and foods left over
  • prepare and bake food for special events as needed
  • assist at banquets or special events as required
  • assist in other food service areas as needed
  • collect money and make correct change
  • maintain regular attendance
  • duty to report to work
  • perform related duties as assigned
