The Cook/Baker position offered at Garrard County Schools is a part-time contract role requiring 4 hours of work per day across 180 days during the school year. Reporting directly to the Director of Food Service, the Cook/Baker will be responsible for preparing, cooking, baking, and serving a variety of foods in quantity at an assigned school site. This role demands a meticulous and experienced individual capable of managing both cooking and baking duties, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene, and providing work direction to others in the kitchen.

In this role, the Cook/Baker will handle tasks such as baking breads, rolls, cakes, and cookies, preparing meat and vegetable dishes, producing salads, soups, and sandwiches, and assisting in managing food inventory and sanitation compliance. The individual must monitor food temperatures for safety and quality assurance and operate various kitchen equipment including ovens, mixers, fryers, and dishwashers. Additionally, accurate record-keeping for food sales, leftovers, and serving quantities will be crucial in maintaining kitchen efficiency and compliance with regulatory requirements.

The Cook/Baker will also be expected to adapt and extend recipes as necessary to meet the needs of the school population while adhering to established nutritional guidelines. The job requires the ability to learn and train others, work under strict health and safety regulations, and communicate effectively to maintain smooth kitchen operations. Physical demands include standing for long periods, lifting up to 50 pounds, and performing other physical tasks essential to kitchen duties. All these responsibilities contribute to creating a safe, healthy, and enjoyable dining experience for students and staff, supporting the district's overall educational mission.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • one year experience in cooking and baking food in large quantities
  • completion of training course for certification of beginning school food personnel
  • ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing
  • ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weights up to 50 pounds
  • ability to stand, sit or walk for extended periods
  • basic math skills
  • ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • ability to maintain sanitation and safety standards in the kitchen

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Prepare and bake rolls, biscuits, breads, cakes, cookies and other baked goods
  • prepare and combine necessary ingredients
  • prepare and cook meat dishes, vegetables and other main dishes
  • prepare salads, sandwiches, fruit, soups, sauces and other foods
  • assist in determining appropriate quantity of food items for cooking and baking
  • adjust and extend recipes as needed
  • maintain food quality standards including appearance and nutritional requirements
  • monitor temperatures of food to assure safety and quality standards are met
  • monitor water temperatures to assure proper temperature for sanitizing
  • serve food according to established guidelines and replenish serving containers as needed
  • serve and sell lunch items to faculty
  • clean cafeteria equipment, utensils and appliances and store food supplies
  • assure compliance with kitchen sanitation and safety procedures and regulations
  • clean refrigerators and storerooms as required
  • assist in storing unused food and supplies
  • dispose of unusable leftovers
  • utilize proper methods of handling foods to be stored
  • operate a variety of standard kitchen utensils and equipment including slicer, chopper, mixer, steamer, fryer, dishwasher, electric warmer, range, oven, pressure cooker, cash register, dishwasher and other cafeteria equipment as required
  • train and provide work direction to others
  • record amounts of food sold and monies collected as assigned
  • assist with inventory and maintain routine records as directed
  • prepare records of foods cooked and foods left over
  • prepare and bake food for special events as needed
  • assist at banquets or special events as required
  • assist in other food service areas as needed
  • collect money and make correct change
  • maintain regular attendance
  • duty to report to work
  • perform related duties as assigned
