Job Description

The current opportunity is for a Cook position within the BILH system, primarily serving the dietary needs of Mount Auburn Hospital patients along with cafeteria patrons. This role works a regular schedule from 11:00am to 7:30pm, Monday through Friday, providing a stable employment framework. The cook’s role is integral to the patient experience, supporting both routine meal preparation and special function catering under high standards of safety and sanitation. The position emphasizes culinary precision, adhering to standardized recipes to ensure consistency, nutritional quality, and patient satisfaction.

The cook is responsible for preparing and garnishing maternity specials regularly, utilizing proper documentation tools for labeling, dieting, and cooling procedures to meet hospital standards. The role includes preparing vegetables, main entrees, soups, sauces, and stuffing for patients and cafeteria services, maintaining a clean and sanitary workspace at all times. Taste testing, temperature verification, and appearance evaluation are crucial to delivery excellence. Additionally, the cook supports batch cooking for temperature-sensitive items guided by tally systems and utilizes waste logs to manage leftovers and reduce food waste responsibly.

Beyond food preparation, this position requires leadership capabilities such as delegating duties to assistants and collaborating with various departments to enhance overall food service quality. Beth Israel Lahey Health offers a competitive pay range from $19.68 to $26.49 per hour, reflective of factors such as experience, education, certifications, and job responsibilities. Additional compensation may come through shift differentials, premium pay, call pay, and overtime. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • minimum one year of experience in institutional food service
  • ability to read and write English
  • knowledge of food safety and sanitation
  • ability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive tasks
  • ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • must be vaccinated against influenza as a condition of employment

Job Qualifications

  • Reading and writing skills to understand recipes and instructions
  • one year of institution-type feeding experience
  • judgment and planning skills to make decisions for preparations
  • knowledge of institutional-type equipment
  • good communication skills for interaction with physicians, administrators, other personnel, and customers

Job Duties

  • Prepares and garnishes maternity specials daily
  • uses proper documentation tools within department standards for labeling, dieting, and cooling procedures
  • assists others with the preparation of food for special functions
  • prepares vegetables and/or main entrees for Mount Auburn Hospital patients and cafeteria following standardized recipes
  • prepares soup, sauces, and stuffing for patient services
  • maintains clean and sanitary work area
  • sets up food for try line in appropriate size pans
  • tests cooked food by taste, temperature, smell, and appearance
  • backs patient try line on grill/broiler as needed
  • follows tally for batch cooking of temperature-sensitive items
  • uses waste logs to record all leftovers and waste with written plans for utilization
  • begins patient food preparation for the following day
  • delegates duties to cook's helper
  • works continuously to improve the total quality of the department and other departments within the institution
