Job Description

University Housing at the University of Oregon is a dynamic and comprehensive department operating within the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management. It is dedicated to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and supportive campus community through its wide array of housing, dining, social, and academic programs. As a $100-million self-sustaining educational and business department, University Housing plays a pivotal role in enhancing the student experience by providing state-of-the-art, affordable housing and dining services designed to promote student success and leadership development. Living on campus through University Housing has been proven to significantly improve academic performance, retention, and graduation rates, making it a key component of the university experience.

The University of Oregon is seeking a Cook 2 to join its University Housing Food Services team in a full-time, ongoing capacity with a pay scale ranging from $19.36 to $28.75 per hour. This position is integral to the preparation and delivery of quality meals that meet the department's high standards for quality, efficiency, and inclusiveness. The Cook 2 will lead and supervise the daily operations within the kitchen, managing food preparation, production, service, and cleanup activities while maintaining compliance with all relevant food safety regulations. This role requires the individual to create a respectful and inclusive work environment, set an exemplary standard for other team members, and support the overarching goals of University Housing to build community and promote equity and responsibility.

Key responsibilities include coordinating meal preparation, assigning tasks to Cook 1s, food service workers, temporary, and student employees, and assisting management with labor cost control, product ordering, and staff training initiatives. The Cook 2 acts as a vital link between management and kitchen staff, providing leadership support and continuity in the manager's absence. The position demands flexibility in scheduling, including availability for night, weekend, and holiday shifts, to accommodate the operational needs of the unit. Working conditions encompass typical food service industry challenges such as slippery floors, temperature extremes, heavy lifting, and prolonged standing periods.

Candidates must obtain a Lane County Food Handler's card within two weeks of employment, with the university providing assistance for certification if needed. As an essential personnel role, the Cook 2 is expected to reliably attend scheduled shifts even during inclement weather or University closures unless otherwise directed. The University of Oregon is committed to equal employment opportunities, ensuring a welcoming and diverse workplace. The role offers a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off, highlighting the university's investment in staff well-being and development.
