Job Description

Shelly's Indigenous Bistro is a vibrant and Indigenous-owned restaurant located at 1364 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB. This establishment is dedicated to serving authentic Indigenous cuisine and providing an inclusive environment that celebrates Indigenous culture and culinary traditions. As a community-focused business, Shelly's Indigenous Bistro takes pride in its commitment to supporting Indigenous employment, training, and economic participation. The bistro is well-known for its high-quality ingredients, innovative menu, and dedication to customer satisfaction.

The company is currently offering part-time cook opportunities that cater to both day and evening shifts. The role is designed for individuals who are reliable, hardworking, and passionate about working in a fast-paced kitchen environment. These part-time positions offer competitive compensation ranging from $17.20 to $20.00 per hour, based on experience. The work schedule includes day shifts, evening shifts, weekends, statutory holidays, catering events, and busy operational peak periods.

The successful candidates will play a crucial role in supporting the daily kitchen operations, ensuring food preparation meets the bistro's high standards, and maintaining cleanliness and organization within the kitchen. Responsibilities include preparing vegetables, proteins, sauces, soups, side dishes, and other menu ingredients, as well as cooking and assembling menu items following recipes and portion standards. Cooks will help manage food quality, presentation, portioning, and timing, and assist with line cooking, prep lists, and kitchen production needs.

Additionally, this position involves supporting catering preparation, packaging, and event production. Proper food storage practices, labelling, dating, and first-in-first-out (FIFO) rotation are essential to ensure food safety. Restocking ingredients, dry goods, supplies, and maintaining clean and sanitized workstations are also key parts of the role. Candidates must be able to operate kitchen equipment safely, report any maintenance concerns, and adhere strictly to all food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety requirements.

Teamwork is highly valued at Shelly's Indigenous Bistro. Successful candidates will collaborate closely with other cooks, supervisors, drivers, and front-end staff to ensure smooth kitchen operations. Flexibility and a willingness to assist other departments when operationally required are important traits. This role also occasionally involves assisting with inventory counts, stock organization, and supply tracking, making it vital for applicants to have strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Emphasizing professional development, the bistro requires Manitoba Food Handler Certification and WHMIS Certification, or the willingness to obtain these upon hire. First Aid/CPR Certification is considered an asset. The role demands the physical capability to withstand extended standing and walking, frequent bending and reaching, repetitive hand and arm movements, working near heat and kitchen equipment, and lifting up to 50 pounds. It also requires excellent communication skills and a positive attitude to foster a respectful and supportive team environment.

Shelly's Indigenous Bistro is not only a workplace but a community space where Indigenous culture and culinary arts are celebrated and shared. The company is proud of its commitment to Indigenous inclusion and may give preference to qualified Indigenous applicants, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals, in alignment with its mission to enhance Indigenous employment and economic participation. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in gaining valuable culinary experience while contributing to a respected Indigenous-owned business. Whether you are looking for day or evening part-time work, this position offers a rewarding and dynamic work environment with competitive pay and opportunities for growth.
