The position available is a permanent, full-time Cook (WG-4) within the Nutrition and Food Service Line at the VA Manchester NH Healthcare System. This role is crucial in preparing nutritious, high-quality meals for veterans, ensuring their dietary needs are met with attention to safety and sanitation. The Cook will engage in various kitchen operations, including meal preparation, cooking, and food handling, with a strong emphasis on following menus, production sheets, and standardized recipes to maintain consistency and quality. This position requires working varied shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays to support continuous food service operations.
The salary range for this position is $24.07 to $28.08 per hour, determined by the Federal Wage System Special Wage Rates for the Boston-Worcester-Providence, Massachusetts wage area. There is no promotion potential associated with this position. The work environment involves operating various kitchen equipment, maintaining cleanliness, ensuring food safety protocols, and physically demanding tasks such as lifting up to 40 lbs unassisted, standing for extended periods, and working in areas with temperature extremes like walk-in refrigerators and freezers.
As a Cook at the VA Manchester Healthcare System, the incumbent will play a critical role in contributing to veterans' health by preparing meals that accommodate regular and modified diets, ensuring ingredient accuracy and portion control to optimize nutritional value while minimizing waste. Duties include cooking a wide array of items ranging from hot cereals to grilled meats, preparing fresh and frozen vegetables, sandwiches, and baked goods, and managing the sanitation of kitchen areas and equipment. The role also demands compliance with federal policies and local procedures governing food storage, labeling, and safety standards.

Job Requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- Suitable for federal employment as determined by background investigation
- Pass urinalysis drug screening prior to appointment
- Selective Service Registration for males born after 12/31/1959
- Completion of online onboarding process with acceptable forms of identification
- Completion of application requirements including submission of required documents
- Willingness to serve a 1-year probationary period
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, push, and pull frequently
- Ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs unassisted
- Ability to manually operate kitchen equipment safely
- Willingness to work varied shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Compliance with hair covering, uniform, and protective equipment requirements
- Ability to work in temperature extremes and noisy environments
- Willingness to receive annual influenza vaccination or obtain exemption

Job Duties
- Prepares and cooks meals that require little or no processing, such as hot cereals, concentrated or dehydrated soups, sauces, and gravies
- Follows menus, production sheets, and recipes to prepare proper items in the quantity needed
- Grills eggs, meat patties, pancakes, French toast
- broils meats
- makes cold sandwich fillings and assembles a variety of sandwiches
- Prepares fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables
- bakes frozen potatoes, pre-made cookie dough, and muffin batters
- Prepares and heats convenience items such as frozen hash browns, fish fillets, and chicken nuggets
- Prepares purred foods and adjusts consistency with thickeners
- Washes, peels, and cuts fruits and vegetables
- assembles and mixes salad ingredients and dessert items, including gelatin molds and fruit crisps
- Weighs, measures, and assembles ingredients for regular and modified diets
- Operates a variety of kitchen equipment and follows appropriate safety procedures
- Follows sanitary food handling procedures
- Combines ingredients according to precisely written recipes to produce quality food items, minimizing preparation time and food waste
- Pans foods for bulk rethermalization according to recipe and production guidelines
