Job Description

The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, is a vital health care institution dedicated to serving the men and women who have served our nation. As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), this Medical Center provides a wide range of medical, surgical, and rehabilitative services to veterans, focusing on improving their health and well-being. The center is committed to upholding the VA's core values of Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence, known collectively as 'I CARE,' and operates within a Whole Health System of care. This approach ensures a personalized health plan for each veteran in the context of healing relationships and environments, connecting every patient back to their community.

Within this extensive healthcare framework, the Nutrition and Food Service department plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and dietary needs of veterans. This department is responsible for preparing nutritious, high-quality meals that cater to the specific health and dietary requirements of the patient population, which often includes individuals with specialized dietary needs. The environment is both dynamic and challenging, involving strict sanitation, safety protocols, and operational efficiency to meet the demands of the medical center.

The Cook position at the VA Medical Center in Omaha is a full-time, permanent role with a wage grade 4 classification, offering an hourly salary range from $21.37 to $24.92. The role demands a high level of skill, attention to detail, and a commitment to providing meals that not only meet nutritional standards but also enhance the overall patient care experience. Employees in this position work a rotating schedule with shifts between 5:30 AM - 2:00 PM or 11:30 AM - 7:00 PM from Sunday through Saturday, five days a week.

Cook responsibilities are varied and require knowledge and judgement across multiple food preparation stages, including cooking meals with minimal processing such as hot cereals, sauces, and gravies; grilling and broiling meats; assembling sandwiches; and baking pre-made doughs and batters. Additional responsibilities include preparing vegetables in multiple forms, heating convenience items, and adjusting meal consistencies for modified diets. The role also involves maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in kitchen work areas, operating dishwashing and kitchen equipment safely, and participating in deep cleaning processes.

The physical demands and environment of this job necessitate continuous standing, walking, bending, and lifting objects up to 40 pounds or more with assistance. Employees work in conditions with extremes of temperature, including hot kitchens and cold storage areas, and must be vigilant about safety to prevent injuries. Protective equipment such as hair coverings, gloves, and uniforms are mandatory to meet hygiene and safety standards.

This position is an excellent opportunity for individuals who value public service and are motivated to contribute directly to the well-being of our Veterans through their culinary skills. It requires adherence to federal employment policies, including background checks and probationary periods, and does not offer relocation incentives or telework options. However, working within the VA system comes with a comprehensive federal employee benefits package and aligns with a mission to honor America’s Veterans by providing exceptional healthcare services.

Ideal candidates should bring a passion for food preparation with a keen awareness of safety and sanitation, a strong work ethic, and the flexibility to work within a health care environment focused on patient-centered care. This role represents a meaningful way to support veterans' health through nutritious meal preparation, contributing to their healing and quality of life.
