The position available is for a full-time Cook (Position Description Title/PD#: Cook / 99818S) within the Nutrition and Food Service department. This role involves independently preparing and cooking a wide variety of meals, including regular and therapeutic diet entrees and dessert items, according to established menus, production sheets, and recipes. The cook will use various cooking methods such as broiling, roasting, baking, frying, boiling, steaming, stewing, braising, and grilling to ensure meals are prepared to the highest standards. Attention to detail is critical, as the position requires slicing meat items by hand to specific size and weight specifications, preparing fresh and frozen vegetables, baking frozen potatoes, and assembling sandwiches and salads. This role demands proficiency in operating kitchen equipment safely, including industrial dish machines, and adhering strictly to sanitary food handling procedures.

Working hours for this position are from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm or 11:00 am to 7:30 pm, with a schedule that may include rotating weekends, shifts, locations, and holidays as required. The position offers a competitive wage, with an hourly pay scale ranging from $24.45 to $28.53 under the WG-6 pay grade. Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation

Job Duties

  • Independently prepares and cooks a variety of items including regular and therapeutic diet entrees and dessert items
  • Follows menus, production sheets, and recipes to prepare items in the quantity needed
  • Grills eggs, meat patties, pancakes, French toast
  • broils meats
  • makes cold sandwich fillings and assembles a variety of sandwiches
  • Uses a variety of methods to prepare meats, fish, and poultry including broiling, roasting, baking, frying, boiling, steaming, stewing, braising, and grilling
  • Slices meat items by hand, confirming to specific size requirements or weight specifications
  • Prepares fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables
  • bakes frozen potatoes, pre-made cookie dough, and muffin batters
  • Prepares and heats convenience items, and prepares pureed foods and adjusts consistency with thickeners
  • Washes, peels, and cuts fruits and vegetables
  • assembles and mixes salad ingredients and dessert items, including gelatin molds and fruit crisps
  • Plans cooking processes to produce meals on time and at the proper temperature which may require coordination of cooking several items with different cooking times
  • Makes a variety of desserts such as cobblers, brownies, cookies, and pastries
  • Weighs, measures, and assembles ingredients for regular and modified diets
  • Operates a variety of kitchen equipment and follows appropriate safety procedures
  • Follows sanitary food handling procedures
  • Disassembles and reassembles equipment for cleaning
  • Cleans and sanitizes work areas, and performs deep cleaning tasks when needed
  • Operates industrial dish machine
  • Performs other related duties
