At Brighton Gardens of Winston-Salem, a part of the Sunrise Senior Living community network, the role of Cook is pivotal in supporting the mission, principles of service, and core values of Sunrise. This position is responsible for the preparation and service of food that meets high standards of taste, quality, safety, and timeliness following established recipes and menus. The Cook is entrusted with managing all food production in the absence of the Dining Services Coordinator, ensuring adherence to all food safety and sanitation requirements while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment. The role supports the overall dining experience, catering to residents’ dietary needs and preferences to enhance their quality of life.

The responsibilities in this role emphasize not only culinary skills but also effective communication, teamwork, and adherence to safety protocols, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment and compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least one year of experience in food preparation in a related environment
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • ServSafe Manager certification
  • Local Health Department Food Handler card
  • Ability to comply with health and safety regulations
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Flexibility to perform various dining services duties
  • Willingness to complete mandatory training and ongoing education
  • Pass pre-employment drug test and background check as required
  • Must be physically able to perform the duties
  • Covid-19 and Influenza vaccination may be required according to applicable laws

Job Qualifications

  • One year job related experience including food preparation in a restaurant, hotel, or other similar environment
  • High school diploma/GED
  • CPR certificate and First Aid certificate
  • ServSafe Manager certificate
  • Local Health Department Food Handler card
  • Prior culinary apprenticeship or training a plus

Job Duties

  • Ensure high standards for food taste and quality are upheld at all times
  • Prepare and serve meals in a timely manner and in accordance with established standardized recipes and menus
  • Utilize production sheets to accurately record food production quantities and cooking, holding, and cooling temperatures
  • Prepare required dietary modifications as ordered
  • Use Sunrise systems per guidelines for order taking and meal delivery to ensure accuracy
  • Stock, rotate, date, and store product according to food safety standards and regulations
  • Maintain clean and organized kitchen, storage, and work areas
  • Complete assigned cleaning duties and ensure accuracy of daily and weekly cleaning logs
  • Maintain accurate equipment logs and report any issues promptly
  • Maintain all cooking equipment in safe and working order and report any issues promptly
  • Comply with national/provincial regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety requirements and Risk Management programs and policies, adhere to safety rules and regulations, and practice safety procedures at all times including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and Lockout Tagout procedures
  • Perform dishwashing tasks to properly wash and sanitize all dishes, silverware, glassware, utensils, and cookware
  • Operate dish machine(s) according to manufacturer instructions
  • Perform light janitorial duties, including sweeping work areas, sanitizing production areas, and emptying trash
  • Clean assigned kitchen equipment including stoves, ovens, fryers, microwaves, mixers, slicers, refrigerators, freezers, worktables, prep sinks, ice makers, coffee machines, hoods, and ventilation screens
  • Assist with service in the dining areas as needed
  • Participate and commit to working toward team goals
  • Demonstrate Team Member Credo in daily interactions
  • Commit to serving residents and guests through Principles of Service
  • Contribute to overall engagement programs for both residents and team members
  • Attend regular meetings including Town Hall, Department Team, Cross Over, and others as directed by Dining Services Coordinator (DSC)
  • Maintain compliance in assigned required training and all training required by state/province or other regulatory authorities as applicable
  • Perform other duties as assigned
