Job Description

Intermountain Health is a renowned healthcare organization committed to providing quality medical services across various facilities in Utah. The organization prides itself on fostering a culture of wellness that encompasses living healthy, happy, secure, connected, and engaged, supporting both its patients and its employees. With multiple locations including the Home Care Building, Lake Park Building, and Supply Chain Center in West Valley City, Utah, Intermountain Health offers a dynamic work environment that emphasizes teamwork, exceptional customer service, and a commitment to community health.

This Cook Floater position is a vital role within Intermountain Health’s food production team, designed for individuals who can adapt to various work settings across three or more of Intermountain Health’s sites. This role operates on a PRN basis, meaning the employee will be on call and cover shifts as needed, providing flexibility and a valuable opportunity for those seeking part-time work or supplementary income. The job requires availability primarily Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm. Although this position is benefits ineligible, it offers a competitive pay rate based on experience, ranging from $18.84 to $24.50 per hour.

The Cook Floater’s primary responsibilities include preparing and cooking a wide variety of foods while adhering to recipes and instructions to ensure quality and consistency. This can involve bulk food preparation, large-scale production, line cooking, or assembling specialty meals and catered items designed for a healthcare setting, retail locations, or patient care units. The job demands maintaining an organized and sanitary working environment and ensuring proper food rotation and production quantities at all times to meet health and safety standards. Interaction with customers is expected, whether serving in catering venues, retail outlets, or directly delivering meals to patients. Additional responsibilities may include cashier duties, stocking inventory, and operating both automatic and manual ware-washing machines.

Key skills for success in this highly interactive role include thorough knowledge of food handling, food safety, and sanitation procedures, as well as the ability to follow precise recipes and instructions. Excellent communication skills and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a team are essential to perform efficiently in fast-paced scenarios. Employees must have manual dexterity to handle complex equipment and the physical stamina to stand for long periods, lift heavy items, and tolerate varying temperature extremes, such as working near grills or refrigerators.

The position requires a Food Handler Permit or ServSafe certification by the first day of employment and prefers candidates with at least one year of experience as a cook or line cook within a healthcare or restaurant environment. A strong ability to read and communicate in English, organize workflows, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines is also important. Though not mandatory, experience in preparing modified diets, providing exceptional customer service, and using commercial cooking equipment will be considered valuable assets.

Intermountain Health’s commitment to a fair and inclusive hiring process ensures equal opportunity for all qualified applicants, regardless of race, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status. The organization integrates AI technology through its HiredScore platform to enhance the recruitment process by matching applicants’ skills and experiences with the best job opportunities available, ensuring a streamlined and equitable application experience.

This role offers a unique chance to contribute to the mission of a trusted health provider by supporting the nutritional needs of patients and customers while growing culinary skills in a healthcare-centric environment. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a dedication to food safety, adaptability to various work environments, strong work ethic, and a passion for delivering high-quality food service with compassion and professionalism.
