Job Description

Cincinnati Children's is a renowned pediatric healthcare institution dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children. Situated in the Burnet Campus, this organization emphasizes a holistic, team-based approach in both patient care and scientific research. The institution boasts an outstanding reputation, having been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 10 best Children's Hospitals in the nation for over 15 years. It ranks consistently among the top three Children's Hospitals for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding and has been acknowledged as one of America's Best Large Employers and Best Employers for New Graduates in 2025. Cincinnati Children's is also well-regarded as an innovative company and a great place to work, further holding prestigious certifications such as Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and recognition as a leading disability employer by the National Organization on Disability.

This full-time position in the Food Services department plays a crucial role in supporting the institution's mission by ensuring that meals prepared for patients and guests meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and nutritional value. The role is based on a 2-3 Shift schedule, encompassing 40 hours per week, with a regular employee status and full-time equivalent (FTE) of 1. The expected starting pay range for this role is $16.65 to $19.80 per hour, reflecting competitive compensation in line with the responsibilities involved.

The role's primary responsibilities include measuring and mixing ingredients accurately in accordance with established recipes and cooking standards, using various kitchen utensils and equipment such as scales, mixers, grinders, and slicers. The incumbent will be tasked with baking, roasting, broiling, steaming, and frying a diverse range of foods including meats, fish, vegetables, and other dishes, with careful observation and adjustment of taste and texture during cooking. Proper portioning onto patient or guest trays is essential, ensuring that every meal served supports patient care and satisfaction.

Safety and cleanliness are paramount in this role, with strict adherence to Department of Health standards and infection control policies required. The worker will maintain high standards of hygiene and storage protocols to ensure safe food production at all times. Monthly in-service trainings are mandatory to keep skills and knowledge current.

Planning and preparation are also integral aspects of this position, involving the review of menus and production sheets to determine necessary quantities of meats, vegetables, sauces, soups, casseroles, breakfast foods, and desserts. Scheduling cooking operations to meet designated timelines is critical to ensure meal readiness. Preparation tasks include washing, trimming, seasoning, and cooking pre-preparation items in alignment with production goals. Adherence to the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) requirements for food preparation, service, and menu planning is essential, with ongoing training to stay informed on CACFP rules.

Sanitation and conservation duties include accurate completion of transportation records for quantities prepared and waste, maintaining appropriate food temperatures either above 140 degrees or below 41 degrees to safeguard food safety, and proper logging of transportation activities on a regular basis.

Customer service is a key component of the role, requiring demonstration of effective and courteous interaction with fellow employees, customers, managers, and visitors. The incumbent must always uphold CARES standards. Additionally, safety concerns must be reported and addressed promptly as part of the safety program within the department.

Cincinnati Children’s commitment to innovation extends to supporting responsible use of artificial intelligence tools to enhance work efficiency and care quality. This position offers a collaborative, supportive environment that values dignity, respect, and inclusivity for all employees regardless of race, color, religion, sex, age, and other protected statuses. Comprehensive job descriptions are provided upon request, underscoring the institution’s commitment to transparency and support for its workforce.
