Job Description
Summit is a specialized food service company focused on serving correctional institutions across the United States. The organization is dedicated to providing incarcerated individuals with access to delicious, nutritious meals during every mealtime. By supporting a dynamic and efficient food service operation within correctional facilities, Summit plays a vital role in contributing to both the nutrition and social interaction opportunities available to inmates. Employing a skilled, motivated culinary team, Summit fosters a commitment to quality food preparation and service in fast-paced and demanding environments.
This role is part of the Crown Point, Indiana location under Summit's correctional facility kitchen division. The position available is a full-time, onsite cook opportunity, offering compensation at $17.50 per hour. The role is ideal for individuals passionate about culinary arts and food preparation who thrive in energetic team settings and are eager to contribute to meaningful food service with a tangible impact. As a cook for Summit, you will be part of a highly motivated and energetic kitchen staff responsible for delivering high-quality meals that meet strict standards of quality, nutrition, and presentation. Your role involves preparing meals from scratch, ensuring proper portion control, maintaining cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, storing food properly, and following food safety regulations and procedures meticulously.
Working for Summit means becoming part of an organization that values personal growth and professional development. The company prides itself on promoting from within and supporting employees' career advancement within its various brand segments and corporate levels. Employees are encouraged to build their culinary skills and expertise while working in an environment that offers stable employment and comprehensive benefits. Summit and its parent company, Elior North America, are committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity employment. Their workforce represents a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, contributing to a collaborative and respectful work culture.
The cook position requires at least one year of prior culinary experience, especially in high-volume establishments emphasizing scratch cooking. Knowledge of culinary methods, techniques, and standards is essential, as is the ability to multitask and maintain attention to detail under pressure. Familiarity with a variety of kitchen equipment and tools, along with the ability to identify and differentiate food items, will be important for success. Experience in customer service is also required, reflecting the interactive nature of the role within the correctional food service context. Preferred but not mandatory is a food handlers' certification, which underscores a commitment to food safety and sanitation.
Summit also offers an attractive package of benefits to full-time employees, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, voluntary offerings for accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity, as well as commuter benefits, an employee assistance program (EAP), 401(k) retirement plans, sick time, holiday pay for nine paid holidays, tuition reimbursement, and paid time off. These benefits contribute to the overall well-being and job satisfaction of employees, making Summit an employer of choice in the corrections food service segment.
Joining Summit means becoming part of a team dedicated to quality, safety, and community-oriented service within correctional institutions. If you are a driven, passionate cook looking to make a meaningful difference through your culinary skills, this full-time position in Crown Point, Indiana, offers a rewarding professional opportunity with the potential for personal and career growth.
