Job Description

The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is a state agency committed to making Arizona's communities safer by delivering effective rehabilitative services to the young people entrusted to their care. ADJC focuses on providing evidence-based rehabilitative programs designed to enhance the well-being of youthful offenders and equip them with the necessary skills and resources to thrive as productive, successful members of society. Located at Adobe Mountain School in Phoenix, Arizona, the ADJC employs dedicated professionals passionate about improving the lives of underserved youth within a secure and supportive environment.

The ADJC is currently seeking applicants for the role of Cook 1, offering a $5,000 hiring bonus and competitive salary ranging from $22.29 to $46,365.28 annually. This position is a key part of the Food Service Team, responsible for preparing, portioning, cooking, and presenting a variety of hot and cold food items for meal periods including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special catered events. The Cook 1 role offers the opportunity to work in a team-oriented setting where collaboration and dedication to quality service are highly valued. Selected candidates will play a direct role in supporting the youth through nutritious meal preparation while adhering to strict health and safety protocols.

This position is vital in maintaining a safe environment through adherence to security protocols within the Food Services Division while ensuring compliance with required health codes and food safety standards. This role requires a hands-on approach to food service, including planning and producing meals for special diets, controlling inventory, ordering supplies, and maintaining the kitchen’s operational efficiency. The successful candidate will have foundational knowledge of the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program, food safety regulations, and quantity food production.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with food preparation expertise who want to impact youth rehabilitation positively. ADJC emphasizes crisis intervention skills and youth management within a secure institutional setting and values candidates experienced in large-scale food service operations. The position requires possession of a valid Maricopa County food handler's permit and the ability to pass comprehensive background checks, behavioral assessments, drug screenings, and physical exams. Candidates should have no felony convictions and must be willing to learn the agency's rules, regulations, and youth treatment techniques. Bi-lingual Spanish-English skills and Serv-Safe Manager certification are preferred but not required.

At ADJC, employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, retirement plans, and wellness programs. The agency supports ongoing professional development and provides a dynamic work environment where employees contribute to meaningful community service and rehabilitation outcomes.
