Job Description
The City of Cape Coral, Florida, is a vibrant municipality known for its extensive parks and recreational amenities aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its residents and visitors. The Parks and Recreation Department of the city is committed to providing diverse recreational programs, special events, and facilities that promote wellness, community engagement, and family-friendly activities. This department plays a critical role in organizing and managing events that highlight the city’s cultural and recreational offerings, thereby fostering a strong sense of community. The Special Events Division within the department is particularly focused on planning and executing various public events, including holiday celebrations and seasonal festivals, which are cherished by the local population.
This job opening is for a Contract position within the Parks and Recreation Department, specifically in the Special Events Division, located in Cape Coral, FL. The role is hourly paid, with a wage range of $14.00 to $17.00 per hour, and offers an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about event coordination, community engagement, and recreational programming. This position is non-exempt, meaning hourly work will be compensated accordingly, and it requires the incumbent to be safety sensitive, including mandatory fingerprinting as part of the hiring process.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic team responsible for both the administrative and fieldwork aspects of special events and general recreational activities. The role demands a blend of organizational skills and hands-on involvement in event planning and execution. It requires flexibility to work during weekends and select holidays such as New Year’s Eve and July 4th, reflecting the nature of community events that occur during these peak times.
Key responsibilities include assisting with facility oversight, maintaining the Parks & Recreation catalog, handling registrations, performing secretarial duties, answering phones, bookkeeping, computer data input, and processing purchase orders and check requests. The position also involves supporting children's programs, providing public relations services, managing reservations, scheduling calendars, operating office equipment, and preparing public service announcements (PSAs). The candidate must be adept at cash handling and capable of professionally interacting with the public.
Additionally, this role supports specialized programming such as serving children at Four Freedoms Park and assisting individuals with developmental disabilities within Special Populations programs. These tasks require a compassionate, patient approach along with recreational programming knowledge. As part of the team, the employee will also perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Candidates must meet minimum qualifications including a High School diploma or GED and are required to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications within 60 days of hire. The physical environment of the job is primarily an office setting with some light lifting, and tasks may require prolonged visual concentration. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for conveying information, explaining procedures, and following instructions. The ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays is mandatory to meet the demands of the special events calendar.
This contract role does not include benefits but offers a fulfilling and community-centered opportunity to contribute to the City of Cape Coral’s recreational and special events programming. It is ideal for individuals with a background or interest in recreational programming, public relations, and event management who are looking to engage directly with the community in a meaningful way.
