Job Description
The position of Telecommunications Operator plays a crucial role in the efficient functioning of a hospital network by providing essential communication services round-the-clock, 24/7, throughout the year. This role operates under the direction of the Telecommunications Manager and is integral to managing the hospital's switchboard, paging console, patient information system, and monitoring systems. The Telecommunications Operator is responsible for responding promptly and accurately to all codes, trauma, and hospital-wide alarms, ensuring that critical notifications and communications are handled efficiently to maintain hospital safety and operational readiness.

Job Requirements
- You must be 18 or older to apply

- previous telephone/switchboard or ACD experience preferred
- basic understanding of medical terminology
- strong customer service skills
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent education and experience
- proficient in English verbally and written
- entry-level experience
- demonstration of ability to train to meet organizational standards in the absence of specific skills
Job Duties
- Receive and process calls daily for the hospital network
- support internal calls from hospital staff for paging and directory assistance
- operate AMCOM paging software system
- initiate and oversee after-hours on-call schedules
- maintain sleep room schedules for medical staff
- call OR and Recovery room nurses for emergency surgical cases
- monitor and respond to hospital activated codes and alarms
- notify essential personnel, security, and 911 services
- perform daily tests of Trauma and Met pagers and document response
- handle all in-patient information calls
- update patient registers for accuracy
- control patient room telephone on/off activity
- restrict/unrestrict hospital telephones as needed
- distribute pagers, telephones, TTY equipment, batteries, directories, and speakerphones
- assist in-house staff requiring international calling and faxing
- institute emergency backup procedures during system failures
- apply listening skills and courtesy when interacting with medical staff and patients
- diffuse irate patient calls as necessary
- cover alternate shifts and holiday schedules
- report to work during inclement weather
- incorporate hospital guiding principles and policies into daily work
- comply with behavioral expectations
- maintain courteous interactions with colleagues and patients
- demonstrate commitment to customer service standards
- participate in quality improvement activities
- complete mandatory education modules
- understand job description and performance expectations
- perform other duties as directed
