Job Description
Wellpoint Federal, a proud member of Elevance Health's family of brands, is a leading organization specializing in the administration of government contracts for Medicare. Partnering closely with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Wellpoint Federal plays a pivotal role in transforming federal health programs to improve healthcare outcomes for millions of Americans. Elevance Health itself is a Fortune 25 company with a rich history in the healthcare industry, dedicated to making healthcare simpler, more accessible, and more effective for individuals and communities. Their commitment to innovation, collaboration, and community impact forms the foundation of the company's culture and operational strategy.
Wellpoint Federal is currently seeking a Computer Operator II to join their dynamic Data Center team located in Shelbyville, KY. This full-time position operates on the night shift from 7 PM to 7 AM within a 24/7 data center environment. The role requires on-site presence to foster consistent face-to-face collaboration, teamwork, and immediate support—a policy designed to optimize communication and operational efficiency while ensuring direct engagement among associates. It is important to note that this position is not eligible for current or future visa sponsorship, and candidates must be within reasonable commuting distance from the Shelbyville location, unless accommodations are legally required.
The Computer Operator II plays a critical role in maintaining the smooth functioning of data center operations. Responsibilities include monitoring nightly batch processing schedules to ensure that job workflows complete on time, providing backup support to the help desk during off-hours to address system access requests, and overseeing cabling tasks involving both copper and fiber optics. The operator is tasked with testing and labeling network cables, updating site cable guides, and conducting network and server monitoring through specialized systems. This role also involves physically racking and stacking servers and switches and collecting Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) readings to support energy efficiency initiatives.
Additionally, the operator ensures that all system and production problems are identified promptly and appropriately addressed to meet batch processing and online scheduling requirements. Compliance with standard data management practices is enforced, including monitoring backup data and verifying that off-site storage standards are met for midrange, mainframe, LAN servers, and workstations. Maintaining precise documentation is essential, as the operator writes and updates quality procedures and ensures that out-of-house data is readily available for distribution when needed.
Ideal candidates will bring at least a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one year of experience working with personal computers within telecommunications and network environments, including midrange or mainframe systems. Residency requirements stipulate that foreign nationals must have lived in the United States for at least three of the past five years. Preferred skills include experience working in data centers with hot aisle/cold aisle configurations, the ability to install or modify modular servers, chassis, and blades using provided manuals, and the capacity to lift more than 50 pounds. Basic knowledge of PCI card installation is also beneficial.
Joining Wellpoint Federal means becoming part of an organization that values associate growth, teamwork, and shared success. Elevance Health offers a comprehensive total rewards package, including paid holidays, paid time off, merit increases, incentive bonuses, medical, dental, vision coverage, short- and long-term disability benefits, 401(k) plans with company match, stock purchase plans, life insurance, wellness programs, and financial education. Elevance Health cultivates an inclusive culture and is committed to equal employment opportunity without regard to a wide range of protected characteristics. Additionally, the company mandates COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations for certain roles to prioritize the health and safety of associates and communities served.
This position offers not just a job but a chance to contribute to the robust infrastructure supporting vital government healthcare programs. If you thrive in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment and are committed to operational excellence, Wellpoint Federal welcomes your application to join their dedicated data center team in Shelbyville, KY.
