Job Description
Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) is a respected nonprofit organization dedicated to serving homeless veterans, their families, and those at risk of homelessness across San Diego County. Since its founding in 1981, VVSD has maintained a steadfast commitment to empowering thousands of military veterans every year through an array of comprehensive programs and services designed to address the many challenges associated with homelessness. Focused on providing individualized support, VVSD strives to help veterans rebuild their lives, regain their independence, and achieve long-term stability and wellness.
The role of Community Outreach & Activities Coordinator at VVSD is a vital, mission-driven position with a unique blend of responsibilities that directly support the healing, recovery, and reintegration processes of veterans living in transitional or residential care. This full-time role requires a compassionate and highly organized individual who possesses a deep respect for military service and a strong dedication to community service. Veterans, military family members, and those experienced in working with nonprofits or military populations are especially encouraged to apply. The coordinator will lead a variety of therapeutic and recreational programs including art, music, pet, physical, and equestrian therapy. They will also coordinate military-related observances such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day, organizing morale-boosting events for veterans, staff, and residents.
A key part of the position is acting as the liaison for legal support programs, including managing the Homeless Court Program. This involves coordinating with legal partners such as the Thomas Jefferson School of Law and DLA Piper, guiding participants through court processes, and collaborating with other municipalities to resolve veteran legal cases. The coordinator will oversee all aspects of volunteer recruitment, training, and engagement, particularly for large-scale events like the annual Stand Down event—which serves homeless and at-risk veterans by providing critical services and support. This event alone involves coordinating the participation of over 1,600 volunteers and managing applications for hundreds of veteran participants.
Beyond coordinating therapeutic activities and legal programs, the coordinator will be instrumental in fostering strong partnerships with community organizations. This outreach facilitates expanded access to vital services and continually adapts to meet the evolving needs of the veteran community. Furthermore, the role demands a proactive individual capable of managing budgets, utilizing platforms like InitLive to streamline volunteer and event coordination, and promoting programs within VVSD and the wider community.
Overall, the Community Outreach & Activities Coordinator position at Veterans Village of San Diego offers a deeply rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of veterans who have served their country. The successful candidate will work in a vibrant, fast-paced environment alongside a dedicated team, supporting veterans’ recovery and reintegration with compassion, expertise, and unwavering commitment. This position also offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package including paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, pension, health insurance, and dental and vision coverage, reflecting VVSD’s dedication to its employees’ well-being and professional growth.
