Job Description
Norfolk Airport Authority is a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia, responsible for the operation and management of Norfolk International Airport, the primary aviation gateway serving Coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks. Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is a vital transportation hub that supports economic growth and connectivity through its services. The airport features eight commercial airlines offering nonstop flights to more than 40 cities across the United States. In recent years, Norfolk International Airport has experienced record passenger traffic, handling nearly 4.9 million passengers in 2025. The Authority is proud of its mission to connect the local community with the global economy by operating the airport safely, reliably, and efficiently. The Norfolk Airport Authority fosters a workplace culture centered on professionalism, responsiveness, innovation, diversity, and excellence — values that are collectively known as P.R.I.D.E. These core values guide the Authority's strategic plan and daily operations, ensuring every team member is engaged in the success and positive passenger experiences at the airport.
The Community & Employee Engagement Coordinator position is a full-time role with a regular shift from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of additional hours for mandatory meetings or special event coordination. The starting annual salary for this position is $72,100. The position supports Norfolk Airport Authority’s mission by enhancing its community presence and improving internal workforce engagement through targeted outreach and communication strategies. This role is responsible for developing and implementing initiatives that improve the airport’s visibility and positive impact in the region, as well as fostering a positive workplace culture by coordinating employee engagement programs. Key responsibilities include organizing community events, public tours, and educational outreach programs that promote awareness of airport operations and careers. The Coordinator also supports charitable partnerships and volunteer activities that align with the Authority’s values, such as Wings for All and United Way Day of Caring.
Internally, this role manages comprehensive employee recognition programs that celebrate achievements and employee milestones, including established awards like Employee of the Year and the SHero Awards. Collaboration with the Customer Experience Manager and Human Resources is essential for implementing employee engagement events, wellness initiatives, and appreciation activities such as holiday celebrations and annual outings. Furthermore, the Coordinator leads a committee dedicated to employee and community engagement and tracks participation metrics aligned with the Authority’s key performance indicators. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, exceptional organizational abilities, creative problem-solving skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office and design tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite. Experience in event planning, employee engagement principles, and community relations best practices is highly valued. The role demands adaptability, teamwork, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, including occasional work during evenings, weekends, or holidays to support events and activities. The Community & Employee Engagement Coordinator position is a unique opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and growing airport authority, helping to shape a vibrant community connection and an engaging work environment for all employees.
