Job Description

The City of Richmond, located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, is a vibrant and diverse community known for its central location and easy access to major transportation options including Amtrak, BART, AC Transit, and ferry services, as well as two major freeways (I-80 and I-580). Richmond offers residents, visitors, and businesses not only logistical convenience but also an abundance of recreational opportunities such as 32 miles of shoreline, over 3,000 acres of shoreline parks, extensive segments of the Bay Trail, and several regional parks and harbors. The city blends substantial economic resources with a cost of living generally more affordable than other Bay Area cities. Richmond prides itself on being a welcoming, diverse, and actively engaged community, embodying its slogan as the City of Pride and Purpose.

The City of Richmond is currently seeking motivated and dedicated individuals to join their team as Community Ambassadors. This position is a part-time, hourly role focused on supporting city beautification, public engagement, and event operations. Community Ambassadors play a critical role in maintaining the city's cleanliness and safety, as well as enhancing the overall experience for residents and visitors. Responsibilities include performing basic cleaning and maintenance tasks such as sweeping, picking up litter, emptying trash receptacles, operating power washers, and even removing graffiti. By working to improve the condition and appearance of the city's public spaces, they contribute directly to fostering a welcoming and safe environment throughout Richmond.

In addition to maintenance responsibilities, Community Ambassadors act as official representatives of the City of Richmond, providing information about city services and programs while directing individuals to the proper resources. They routinely patrol city parks, right-of-ways, facilities, and other public areas on foot or by using bicycles or other vehicles, keeping a watchful eye for hazards or maintenance needs. This visible presence helps to improve safety and community connections.

Community Ambassadors also support city events by assisting with setup and breakdown duties, managing reserved spaces, facilitating crowd control, and ensuring event facilities such as park restrooms are open and properly maintained. This role often requires working varied shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays, making flexibility and a commitment to public service essential qualities. Moreover, the position may involve capturing event photos or video for city reporting purposes.

This opportunity is ideal for individuals passionate about community service, teamwork, outdoor work, and making a tangible difference in public spaces. The City of Richmond provides training and support to ensure employees are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for success. While this job classification does not offer benefits, it provides valuable experience in community engagement, maintenance, and public event facilitation. The City enforces a COVID-19 vaccination policy requiring all new hires be fully vaccinated including a booster, barring approved accommodations.

Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate excellent customer service skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. A driver's license is necessary for travel among varied City locations. The City of Richmond values equal opportunity and prohibits discrimination in hiring decisions. By joining as a Community Ambassador, employees become part of an inclusive, dynamic, and proud municipal workforce committed to maintaining Richmond’s pride and purpose.
