Job Description

Grand Central Bakery has been a staple in the Northwest since 1989, initiating a remarkable bread revolution through its dedication to rustic artisan loaves. As a Certified B Corporation, the bakery is deeply committed to sustainability, which permeates every aspect of its operations—from sourcing ingredients to cultivating a supportive work environment and investing in community wellbeing. The company prides itself on upholding core values that emphasize positive impact, high standards, teamwork, and continual innovation. Grand Central Bakery operates as part of a global movement aimed at using business as a force for good, making it a leader not only in quality baked goods but also in ethical business practices and social responsibility.

The role available is for a Commissary Pastry Baker 1, an entry-level position within the pastry production team. This position is essential in producing high-quality, consistent, and delicious pastry products efficiently. The baker will work within a dynamic team environment focused on collaboration and continuous skill improvement. Working at Grand Central Bakery means being part of a community that values respectful communication, proactive problem-solving, and a collective commitment to excellence. The job requires adaptability and a readiness to work flexible schedules including weekends, given the bakery’s seven-day, year-round operations.

As a Commissary Pastry Baker 1, you will be expected to master various production stations such as spiral mixer, paddle mixer, finishing pastry, sheeter, scaling, and bench work, while ensuring equipment is used safely and correctly. The role entails active participation in quality control, monitoring production goals, and maintaining high safety and sanitation standards including GMP, HAACP, and food defense protocols. This position reports to the Pastry Operations Manager and is supported by Pastry Baker Leads. Compensation is set at $21.74 per hour with overtime eligibility. The role is non-exempt and demands a proactive attitude, high energy, and the initiative to meet and exceed departmental financial and quality goals.

The bakery seeks individuals who are dedicated not only to their craft but also to fostering an anti-racist and culturally inclusive workplace. Strong communication skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to handle physically demanding tasks such as standing for long periods and lifting up to 50 pounds are fundamental. Previous pastry experience or completion of a formal pastry program is preferred but not mandatory, as continuous growth and skill development are highly encouraged.

Overall, this position offers a meaningful opportunity to join a well-respected, values-driven company in the artisan bakery space. Candidates will find a rewarding work environment rooted in tradition, sustainability, and community focus, where their contributions directly support the mission of delivering exceptional baked goods while championing responsible business practices.
