Job Description
The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) is a state agency dedicated to providing workers' compensation insurance coverage to employers across Ohio. With seven offices strategically located throughout the state, BWC operates core hours from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., offering flexibility in start and end times to accommodate operational needs. This commitment to flexibility underscores BWC’s dedication to fostering a supportive work environment that values work-life balance. BWC is known for a positive workplace culture, with employees frequently noting opportunities for growth, a strong sense of family and support, and a welcoming environment that embraces diversity and teamwork. This agency places emphasis on employee engagement, as reflected in their annual internal surveys, which highlight team dedication, career longevity, and pride in service.
The role of Event and Exposition Manager within BWC is instrumental in orchestrating the agency’s annual convention, requiring the candidate to lead both in-person and virtual exposition activities. This position is ideal for a highly organized professional with a proven background in event planning, conference management, and marketing. The Event and Exposition Manager drives exhibitor recruitment and retention, ensuring the event aligns with agency goals and industry standards. Duties involve conducting thorough research and data analysis on trade show operations, developing floor plans that optimize traffic flow, managing vendor relationships, and implementing customer service strategies to enhance attendee and exhibitor experiences. This role also involves analyzing event performance metrics to inform continuous improvements in budgeting, programming, and operations, ensuring the agency’s event remains competitive and impactful.
As a member of a state agency team, the individual in this position benefits from a comprehensive package of competitive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, paid time off, and various types of leave including childbirth and foster care. Additional perks include educational opportunities, public retirement systems, and deferred compensation plans. BWC encourages growth and development, providing employee development funds and supporting loan forgiveness programs. The position requires flexibility, including potential overtime during peak periods like the Safety Congress preparation and willingness to travel to event sites, often requiring overnight stays.
Candidates for this role must demonstrate experience in event and conference planning, especially in the convention and trade show industry. They should possess knowledge of public relations, fiscal management, computer software suites (Microsoft Office and event-specific software), and occupational safety and health industries. Effective communication skills, multi-tasking ability, and competence in managing complex projects simultaneously are essential. The position emphasizes analytical capability, self-direction, resilience under pressure, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
Employment with BWC is subject to a background check and adherence to Ohio’s drug-free workplace policy. The agency also commits to inclusivity and accommodations per the Americans with Disabilities Act, reflecting its broader commitment to equal employment opportunities. This role offers new employees placement at the entry pay step with structured salary advancement over time linked to performance and longevity, ensuring a rewarding career path within a respected state agency.
