Job Description

This role is for a Barista position within the Coffee Shop department at Hy-Vee. The Barista will play a crucial role in delivering excellent customer service by efficiently managing coffee and food orders, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and creating a welcoming atmosphere for customers. This position is non-exempt and part of the operational team directly reporting to district and store-level management including the District Store Director and Coffee Shop Department Manager. The role requires proactive engagement with customers, attentiveness to product freshness, and cooperation with fellow team members to ensure smooth daily operations.

The Barista is responsible for preparing and replenishing coffee and food products, handling customer orders both in-person and via telephone, and ensuring adherence to health and safety standards. This individual must be capable of handling moderate physical activity such as lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, standing for extended periods, and performing repetitive tasks. Strong interpersonal skills are essential since this role involves constant interaction with customers, addressing their requests with patience and professionalism, and contributing positively to Hy-Vee's customer-focused culture.

In addition to providing quality customer service, the Barista is expected to maintain the appearance and hygiene of the coffee shop work area, manage inventory levels, assist with pricing and ordering products, and support other store areas when needed. Knowledge of basic math and ability to follow written or verbal instructions are required to perform duties effectively. Hy-Vee emphasizes a team-based approach, and Baristas work closely with colleagues to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.

Job Requirements

  • Less than high school education or equivalent experience
  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience
  • Ability to do simple addition and subtraction
  • Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
  • Ability to report to work on time and as scheduled

Job Duties

  • Provides prompt efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store
  • Makes an effort to learn customers' names and to address them by name whenever possible
  • Assists customers by escorting them to the products they're looking for securing products that are out of reach loading or unloading heavy items making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience
  • Answers the telephone promptly when called upon and provides friendly helpful service to customers who call including taking customer orders
  • Takes customer orders at the counter
  • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • Handles food in a safe manner and ensures the work area is always clean and neat
  • Reviews the status and appearance of the food for freshness
  • Ensures that an adequate food supply is ready and on hand and develops or follows a production list
  • Anticipates product needs for the department on a daily basis
  • Prepares and replenishes product as necessary
  • Checks in product puts product away and may review invoices
  • Runs the department registers and receives payment makes change etc where applicable
  • Removes trash in a timely manner
  • Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress
  • Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time
