Clean Harbors has established itself as a trusted partner for many industries by solving complex environmental challenges through innovative and reliable methods. The company emphasizes Health and Safety as its number one priority, striving to uphold this commitment every day of the year. It also focuses on sustainability and cleaning the earth, aligning its business operations with environmental stewardship.

Clean Harbors offers comprehensive health benefits coverage after just 30 days of full-time employment, including 401(k) plans with company match, an Employee Stock Purchase Plan, and opportunities for career advancement with company-paid training and tuition reimbursement. The salary range for the Environmental Field Chemist role is between $24 and $27 per hour. This position is suitable for transitioning military members, career starters, or those looking to grow within a company focused on environmental services. The company provides extensive internal mobility, allowing for transfers across more than 200 branch locations and opportunities to advance into higher management roles.

The Environmental Field Chemist (CleanPack Chemist) role at Clean Harbors in Albuquerque, NM, is a critical part of the company's operations in chemical waste handling and environmental safety. Unlike laboratory-based chemists, this position requires hands-on work both indoors and outdoors at customer sites, including plants, labs, and household hazardous waste (HHW) collection events. The role involves handling, segregating, packing, and inspecting chemical waste, ensuring all activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations as well as company policies and procedures. This is a customer-facing position, requiring strong interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise directly with clients at various industrial and laboratory settings.

Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with lab packs within customer facilities, managing hazardous waste projects from start to finish, and ensuring all waste is packaged, labeled, and shipped in compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other relevant regulations. The Environmental Field Chemist is tasked with performing inspections to maintain proper housekeeping in staging and storage areas, checking for leaks or spills, and ensuring the safe handling and disposal of a wide range of chemicals, including reactives and compressed gases. Attention to detail is vital as the role includes preparing shipping documentation such as packing lists, manifests, and notifications to comply with land disposal restrictions.

This entry-level role serves as a pathway to a fulfilling career at Clean Harbors, with extensive training included to build the necessary skills and knowledge in environmental services. Many of the company’s current middle and senior managers began their careers in this role, demonstrating the potential for long-term growth and development. Employees benefit from an inclusive and supportive work environment committed to diversity, equal opportunity, and reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Clean Harbors is also recognized as a Military and Veteran friendly employer, supporting those transitioning from military service into civilian careers.

In summary, the Environmental Field Chemist position at Clean Harbors offers a dynamic and impactful career opportunity focused on environmental protection and compliance. It combines hands-on hazardous waste management with customer service and regulatory adherence, providing a solid foundation for professional advancement in a growing industry.
