Job Description
Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is a mission-driven, equal opportunity employer dedicated to fostering creativity and artistic expression in the community. Established as a reputable cultural institution, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA) offers diverse programs and exhibitions to engage a wide audience, promoting the appreciation and education of visual arts. As part of its commitment to supporting arts education, the institute operates the Kirk Newman Art School (KNAS), which provides comprehensive classes for students of varying levels and ages. The Ceramics Department within KNAS is a vital section that nurtures the art of ceramics through specialized instruction and hands-on practice.
The Clay Mixer position in the Ceramics Department is a crucial operational role supporting the department’s function by managing and preparing the clay materials essential for ceramic art classes and programs. Working under the supervision of the Ceramics Department Chair, this part-time role contributes significantly to maintaining the quality and availability of various types of clay including stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware. The Clay Mixer ensures that the department is well-equipped with mixed clay, enhancing the experience of students, faculty, and guests who participate in the ceramics programs offered by the institute.
In this role, the Clay Mixer is responsible for mixing clay batches precisely according to the needs of classes conducted on-site, which include offerings for both adult learners and children, as well as collaborative programs with Kalamazoo Valley Community College and other educational initiatives. The position requires up to 12 hours weekly during academic sessions, with additional hours during the week before classes begin. Flexibility is necessary to occasionally accommodate weekend and evening schedules. Beyond clay preparation, the role involves maintaining a clean, organized, and safe mixing environment and carefully operating the necessary equipment such as clay mixers and pug mills.
The Clay Mixer also plays an active role in inventory management by monitoring the supply of dry materials and promptly reporting shortages to ensure continuous availability of materials. While supervisory responsibilities are not part of this role, the Clay Mixer works closely with the Ceramics Department’s Chair and Technician to support smooth departmental operations. The collaborative atmosphere encourages a collegial spirit, fostering teamwork and communication throughout the ceramics programs.
This position offers unique benefits tailored to enhance the professional and educational growth of the Clay Mixer. These benefits include one personal tuition waiver for a course per term during active employment, enabling the Clay Mixer to expand their artistic skills further at the Kirk Newman Art School. Additionally, if the Clay Mixer chooses to enroll in a ceramics department course, kiln units are provided at no extra cost, facilitating the firing process essential to ceramics work. However, no other traditional employee benefits are included with this position.
Overall, the Clay Mixer role at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts represents an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about ceramics and arts education to contribute to a thriving art community. It is ideal for candidates who possess proven skills in mixing and managing clay materials and who appreciate a cooperative and independent work environment. This position supports the institute’s mission to promote artistic excellence and educational enrichment while providing practical experience in a respected cultural institution.
