The Driver Trainee role is entry-level, designed to train individuals in operating tractor trailers or straight trucks on various routes including intrastate, interstate, local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight deliveries. This role emphasizes safety, professionalism, and excellent customer service. As a Driver Trainee, the individual will participate in structured training programs such as the PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program. Training includes hands-on experience riding with and assisting experienced drivers, learning to perform all required safety inspections, and understanding Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company policies regarding safe driving practices. The trainee is responsible for verifying and securing freight, loading and unloading products, maintaining accurate delivery paperwork, and interacting with customers professionally to ensure smooth delivery operations.
This role requires the trainee to develop competencies in managing freight securely, conducting damage control, and handling customer returns efficiently. The position demands physical capability to handle freight of varying sizes, including lifting and utilizing tools like two-wheelers and lift gates. Accurate record-keeping is essential, including daily hours of service in compliance with federal, state, and company regulations. Regular housekeeping duties related to the tractor and trailers are also part of the role. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED or state approved equivalent
- Six plus months commercial driving experience
- Valid CDL A
- Must be 21 years of age
- Meet all state licensing and or certification requirements where applicable
- Clean motor vehicle report for past 3 years
- Pass post offer drug test
- Pass road test
- Attain or have valid current DOT Health Card
- Able to hand-lift and utilize two-wheeler, lift gate and or other equipment to move and or stack product cases or freight of varying size and weight throughout shift
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED or state approved equivalent
- Six or more months of commercial driving experience
- Valid CDL Class A license
- Ability to pass post offer drug test
- Ability to pass road test
- Attain or hold a valid current DOT Health Card
- Clean motor vehicle report for the past three years
- Ability to hand-lift and utilize equipment to move varying size freight
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Meet all state licensing or certification requirements where applicable
Job Duties
- Attend and successfully complete Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program
- Ride with and assist driver trainer during deliveries
- Perform all required safety checks including pre and post-trip inspections
- Follow DOT regulations and company safety policies
- Inspect and verify loaded freight and complete accurate paperwork
- Deliver customer orders according to route schedules
- Load and unload products, verify deliveries, and collect payments
- Ensure security of tractor, trailer, and freight at all times
- Maintain cleanliness and perform housekeeping duties at loading docks and trailers
- Complete and maintain daily logs in compliance with DOT and company requirements
- Perform other related duties as assigned
