The position available is for a Food and Food Service Delivery Driver, a critical role within the company responsible for maintaining the integrity of the food supply chain. This role involves driving tractor trailers or straight trucks on intrastate and interstate routes including local, over-the-road, shuttle, overnight, and drive-and-drop assignments. Candidates will begin with a 5-day workweek with the convenience of returning home daily, starting early with dispatch times between 4 am and 5 am. The average annual pay ranges from $65,000 to $75,000, reflecting competitive compensation aligned with the responsibilities associated with this position.

The core purpose of the delivery driver role is to ensure the timely and safe delivery of food products and related items to customers, maintaining the quality and condition upon arrival while serving as the face of Cheney Brothers through exemplary customer service and professionalism. Delivery drivers are expected to develop and maintain lasting relationships with customers by interacting in a courteous and efficient manner, handling customer inquiries, and representing the company positively.

Key aspects of the role include performing all required safety checks pre- and post-trip to comply with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, ensuring vehicles meet company safety standards, and immediately reporting safety risks or necessary repairs. Drivers are responsible for securing freight properly, verifying loaded items against customer invoices, completing accurate and legible shipment paperwork, and adhering strictly to DOT regulations and internal policies. They will also manage loading and unloading trucks, including handling damaged goods and customer returns, using appropriate equipment such as hand-lifts, two-wheelers, and lift gates. Drivers must maintain logs of hours of service in compliance with DOT rules and perform general housekeeping duties in their trucks and loading areas.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • at least 12 months commercial driving experience
  • valid CDL-A license
  • minimum age of 21 years
  • compliance with state licensing and certification requirements where applicable
  • clean motor vehicle report for last 3 years
  • successful completion of drug screening and background check
  • passing a road test
  • possession or ability to obtain a valid DOT Health Card
  • physical ability to hand-lift and use loading equipment for freight handling

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent
  • 12+ months commercial driving experience
  • valid CDL-A
  • must be 21+ years of age
  • meet all state licensing and/or certification requirements where applicable
  • clean motor vehicle report for past 3 years
  • pass post offer drug test and criminal background check
  • pass road test
  • attains or has valid current DOT Health Card and/or able to secure new DOT Health Card
  • able to hand-lift and utilize equipment to move and stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight

Job Duties

  • Communicates and interacts with customers, vendors and co-workers professionally ensuring questions are answered accurately and in a timely manner
  • functions as a team member within the department and organization, as required, and perform any duty assigned to best serve the company
  • performs all required safety checks including pre/post trip inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to DOT regulations
  • reports all safety issues and/or repairs required
  • follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
  • immediately reports all safety hazards
  • inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
  • performs count check of items and check customer invoices of products that have been loaded
  • checks and completes all required paperwork associated with freight
  • moves tractor to the loading dock and attach preloaded trailer as needed
  • drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
  • unloads products from the trailer and transports items into designated customer storage areas
  • performs damage control checks on items, scans, and contacts supervisor about removing orders according to company policy
  • verifies delivery of items with customer and obtains proper signatures
  • collects money where required and loads customer returns onto trailer and secures trailer doors
  • ensures tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and secured
  • unloads damaged goods and customer returns and brings them to driver check-in completing necessary paperwork
  • completes daily record of hours of service and enters in log per Federal DOT, state, and company requirements
  • performs general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keeps trailers clear and clean
  • secures all equipment and completes all necessary paperwork at end of shift
  • performs other related duties as assigned
