Hyatt is currently seeking an enthusiastic and well-rounded Claims Director to join its Risk team. This key leadership role involves overseeing tender claims and litigated insurance claims with a focus on premises liability matters across the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The Claims Director will collaborate closely with internal Risk, Legal, and business teams, as well as external insurance carriers and defense counsel, to manage complex insurance disputes and litigation processes. In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute strategically to risk mitigation and process improvements, enhance outside defense counsel panels, and provide expert guidance on coverage issues and litigation risk assessments. Job Requirements
- 5-6 years of experience in insurance claims, law firm or corporate law department, with a focus premises liability and/or insurance coverage disputes
- Ability to think critically and make well-reasoned decisions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to handle multiple projects and competing deadlines
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- High level of integrity and professional ethics
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Spanish skills are a plus
Job Qualifications
- 5-6 years of experience in insurance claims, law firm or corporate law department, with a focus premises liability and/or insurance coverage disputes
- Curious and proactive mindset, with the ability to adapt to change and respond constructively to setbacks
- Demonstrated track record of taking accountability for outcomes
- Ability to think critically, make clear and well-reasoned decisions, and possessing strong verbal and written communication skills to communicate the same
- Strategic, pragmatic, and business-oriented approach to resolving disputes
- Responsible and proactive self-starter, capable of simultaneously handling multiple, multi-faceted projects and competing deadlines
- Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of cross-functional teams
- High level of integrity and professional ethics
- Team player with strong interpersonal skills who can build connections with people at all levels
- Comfort with disputes arising out of Latin America and the Caribbean and Spanish skills are a plus but not required
- A Juris Doctorate or paralegal certificate
- Insurance, risk management experience
- Spanish language proficiency
Job Duties
- Partnering with colleagues within the legal and Hyatt Global Risk departments, insurance carriers, and insurance defense counsel to manage litigated insurance in the United States and abroad
- Proactively assessing and managing insurance coverage disputes and determining coverage applicability across primary, excess, and owner placed policies, including DIC/DIL (gap coverage)
- Tendering and monitoring claims which are not covered by Hyatt’s insurance program
- Working across Hyatt Legal / Risk functions to support process improvement for insured matters, and the development loss mitigation strategies
- Support Hyatt in evaluating and improving outside defense panel
- Assessing litigation risk, including advising clients on estimated costs of litigation, possibilities of success, and potential settlement options
- Managing electronic discovery, including litigation holds, record management, and document preservation
- Providing business clients and colleagues within the legal and risk departments with guidance regarding litigation and other disputes, including pre-litigation advice and counsel
- Developing and managing case budgets
- Managing and collaborating with outside counsel insurance carriers and insurance defense counsel in all aspects of pre-litigation and litigation, including developing strategy, reviewing pleadings, coordinating discovery and factual investigation, conducting settlement negotiations, and supporting depositions, hearings, and trials
- Traveling, as appropriate, domestically and internationally, to attend hearings, mediations, and trials
