This full-time, in-person driving position at FedEx Freight offers a starting pay rate of $31.26 per hour and is ideal for experienced commercial drivers seeking a stable and rewarding career in the freight transport sector. The role primarily involves the pickup and delivery of freight between service centers and customers, pivotal in supporting the company’s sales process by ensuring efficient and effective logistics operations. The job demands a high level of responsibility, including performing daily pre-trip and safety inspections to ensure vehicle and cargo safety, handling freight with appropriate equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks, securing freight inside trailers to prevent damage, and managing necessary documentation and reports. Drivers are expected to comply with hazardous material regulations, collect payments from customers when required, and maintain constant communication with dispatch and customers to optimize service delivery and identify new business opportunities.

Job Requirements

  • Must possess a class A commercial driver’s license with double/triple, hazardous materials and tank endorsements
  • Must possess one year experience within the most recent three years or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course
  • Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record based on hiring standards
  • Must meet all Department of Transportation regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier regulations
  • Must obtain the hazardous materials endorsement within 120 days of hire
  • Long combination vehicle drivers in specified states must meet qualification and certification standards
  • Must have ability to count and perform basic math
  • Must have basic written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Must be physically able to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
  • Must be able to follow instructions and complete training
  • Must be able to work independently and/or as a team member

Job Qualifications

  • Possess a class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements
  • Automatic transmission CDL restriction allowed
  • Have at least one year of experience within the most recent three years or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course
  • Possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards
  • Meet Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations
  • Meet Long Combination Vehicles (LCV) Qualification and Certification Minimum Standards if operating in specified states
  • Ability to count and perform basic math
  • Possess basic written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds several times a week
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member

Job Duties

  • Operate tractor-trailer combinations including doubles and triples and/or straight trucks
  • Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment
  • Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor or trailer
  • Perform freight handling using motorized and manual equipment including forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
  • Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope
  • Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
  • Verify and complete required documentation and reports
  • Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures
  • Collect cash or checks for freight charges and maintain required documentation
  • Follow dispatch instructions and communicate regarding delays, arrivals, and equipment problems
  • Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business
  • Demonstrate internal and external customer service
  • Ask for additional business from customers and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
  • Perform chaining of vehicle tires when required
  • Perform duties of road driver or dock employee as needed
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as required
