Job Description

The position available is for a professional and experienced Commercial Tractor-Trailer Driver who will be responsible for transporting freight between FedEx Freight service centers and customer locations. The role involves operating various types of trucks including tractor-trailer combinations, doubles, triples (where applicable), and straight trucks, ensuring safe and timely delivery. This position is a full-time role with an attractive hourly pay range starting at $31.93 up to $36.97 per hour, along with mileage pay for specific linehaul duties. The driver will perform key functions such as daily pre-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with Department of Transportation regulations. They will be responsible for securing freight properly inside trailers, using appropriate tools such as pallets, straps, and ropes, and handling damaged freight responsibly by recouping or repairing when necessary. This position requires individuals who can operate motorized and manual freight handling equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks to load and unload cargo efficiently.

Additionally, the driver must maintain accurate documentation and reports related to freight and deliveries, comply with hazardous material regulations, and communicate effectively with dispatch and customers to address delivery needs and potential sales opportunities. The role may also involve secondary duties such as chaining tires in winter conditions and assisting dock employees or road drivers when operational needs arise. This flexibility enhances the overall efficiency of operations and ensures smooth functioning even under varied conditions.

Candidates must meet stringent requirements, including possessing a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with necessary endorsements for doubles/triples, hazardous materials, and tank vehicles. The position demands a minimum of one year of relevant driving experience within the most recent three years or successful completion of the FedEx Freight Driver Development Course. Applicants must have an excellent Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and meet all federal Motor Carrier regulations. Physical demands include the ability to lift and carry freight weighing up to 100 pounds, to sit for extended periods, and to perform physical activities such as bending, climbing, and twisting.

Job Requirements

  • Long combination vehicle operation qualification and certification for specified states
  • Ability to count and perform basic math
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds several times a week
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member

Job Duties

  • Operate tractor-trailer combination including doubles and triples and/or straight trucks
  • Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment
  • Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
  • Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment such as forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
  • Secure freight inside trailers using tools such as pallets, straps, and rope
  • Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
  • Verify and complete required documentation and reports
  • Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures
  • Collect cash or checks for freight charges and maintain documentation
  • Follow dispatch instructions and communicate delays, arrivals, and equipment problems
  • Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business
  • Demonstrate internal and external customer service
  • Ask for additional business from customers and provide leads to sales
  • Perform chaining of vehicle tires when required
  • Perform job duties of road driver or dock employee as needed
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies
  • Perform other duties as required
