Job Requirements

  • High school or vocational school coursework in kitchen basics such as food safety preferred
  • Prior related experience preferred
  • Basic understanding of or the ability to learn basic sanitation and regulations for workplace safety
  • Basic understanding of or the ability to learn food handling techniques, preparation, and cooking procedures
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain personal hygiene
  • Prolonged periods of standing and working in a kitchen
  • Exposure to extreme heat, steam, and cold is present in a kitchen environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times
  • Must be able to work late nights and unpredictable hours, including days, weekends, nights and holidays
  • Manual dexterity to cut and chop foods and perform other related tasks

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Coursework in food safety or kitchen basics preferred
  • Prior baking or kitchen experience preferred
  • Knowledge of sanitation and safety regulations
  • Ability to measure and mix ingredients accurately
  • Skilled in operating baking and mixing equipment
  • Capable of decorating and applying toppings to baked goods
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure
  • Basic recipe development skills

Job Duties

  • Check products for quality and identify damaged or expired goods
  • Set oven temperatures and place items into hot ovens for baking
  • Combine measured ingredients in bowls of mixing, blending, or cooking machinery
  • Place dough in pans, molds, or on sheets and bake in production ovens or grills
  • Set time and speed controls for mixing machines, blending machines, or steam kettles to mix or cook ingredients according to instructions
  • Measure or weigh flour or other ingredients to prepare batters, doughs, fillings, or icings
  • Observe color of products being baked and adjust oven temperatures, humidity, or conveyor speeds accordingly
  • Check the quality of raw materials to ensure standards and specifications are met
  • Check equipment to meet health and safety regulations and perform maintenance or cleaning
  • Adapt the quantity of ingredients to match the amount of items to be baked
  • Apply glazes, icings, or other toppings using spatulas or brushes
  • Decorate baked goods such as cakes or pastries
  • Roll, knead, cut, or shape dough for sweet rolls, pie crusts, tarts, cookies, or other products
  • Direct or coordinate bakery deliveries
  • Order or receive supplies or equipment
  • Prepare or maintain inventory or production records
  • Operate slicing or wrapping machines
  • Develop new recipes for baked goods
  • Other duties as directed
