Job Description
St. John's School is a prestigious coeducational independent day school located in Houston, Texas, committed to providing a high-quality education that fosters intellectual curiosity, character development, and leadership skills in its diverse student body. Renowned for its rigorous academic programs and vibrant community, St. John's School nurtures students to achieve excellence in both their academic and personal lives. The school takes pride in blending tradition with innovation and emphasizes a holistic educational experience that includes academics, arts, athletics, and service opportunities, creating a dynamic environment where students and faculty thrive together.
The role of Chef at St. John's School is a vital part of the institution’s commitment to the health and wellness of its students. The Chef will report directly to the Director of Food Services and will be a key player in the food service team, sharing responsibilities for all culinary initiatives and ensuring that the school's food service upholds the highest standards of quality, safety, nutrition, and operational excellence. This full-time position offers a year-round salary with benefits and operates primarily during school hours Monday through Friday, from 6:00 a.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m., with occasional evening engagements.
The Chef’s responsibilities encompass overseeing food production, training and supervising kitchen staff, maintaining kitchen culture consistent with the school’s core values, and implementing innovative culinary concepts to enhance the dining experience. The position demands a hands-on leader who can manage high-volume food service operations, including menu planning, food requisition, catering event preparations, and compliance with sanitation and safety regulations. With culinary certification from an accredited school being a requirement, and a preference for candidates with over five years of experience in high-volume banquets, catering, or campus dining environments, this role represents an excellent opportunity for an experienced chef to contribute to an enriching educational community.
Beyond culinary expertise, the ideal candidate will exhibit exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, demonstrating teamwork, creativity, and initiative. The physical nature of the job requires stamina and the ability to perform various physical duties such as standing for long periods, lifting, stooping, and reaching. This position is not only about preparing food but about fostering a positive, supportive culture in the kitchen that aligns with the school’s mission to promote student wellness through nutritious, fresh, and high-quality meals. Through leadership, teaching, and collaboration, the Chef will play a pivotal role in supporting the overall wellbeing and success of the students and staff at St. John's School.
