Job Description
The United States Navy Culinary Specialists (CSs) play a crucial role in maintaining the morale and well-being of Navy personnel by operating and managing messes and living quarters across ships and shore bases. Known as the "heart of the ship," the mess decks and dining areas are vital to creating a comfortable and efficient environment for service members. Culinary Specialists are responsible for preparing menus, managing subsistence inventories, ordering food, and maintaining financial records to ensure smooth food service operations. Their expertise extends beyond typical kitchen duties as they also provide food service catering for high-ranking officials, including admirals, senior government executives, and even operating the prestigious White House Mess for the President of the United States.
Culinary Specialists serve aboard every ship and shore base, offering their skills in fast-paced and demanding work environments such as shipboard galleys, mess decks, and shore-based hotel-type living quarters. Their role encompasses various responsibilities such as menu preparation, food ordering, kitchen and dining facility operations, inventory management, and financial oversight. Additionally, they serve as personal food service specialists in commanding officers' and admirals' messes and can also function as flight attendant aircrewmen, demonstrating the versatility and importance of their position.
Working as a CS requires a strong commitment to teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to handle both the physical and mental challenges of the role. Approximately 60% of their time is spent assigned to fleet units while 40% is devoted to shore stations over the course of their career, which typically spans 20 years. Training for Culinary Specialists begins with Navy Recruit Training, followed by a specialized seven-week A school course at Fort Lee, Virginia.
