Job Description

Navy Culinary Specialists (CSs) are essential members of the United States Navy, responsible for operating and managing messes and living quarters that subsist and accommodate Navy personnel. These specialists play a crucial role in maintaining the morale and well-being of the ship’s crew by ensuring quality food preparation and service. Culinary Specialists prepare menus, manage subsistence inventories, and maintain financial records relating to food service operations. Their duties extend beyond food preparation to include operating kitchen and dining facilities, managing shipboard and shore-based living quarters, and even serving as personal food service specialists for commanding officers and admirals. The role of Culinary Specialists is highly visible and impactful, often regarded as the "heart of the ship" for their contribution to the daily lives and spirits of sailors.

The position of a Navy Culinary Specialist is both physically and mentally demanding, requiring the ability to work as part of a team in high-pressure environments. Culinary Specialists serve on every ship and shore base within the Navy, operating shipboard galleys, mess decks, dining areas, and shore-based facilities that can be fast-paced and detail-oriented. Aside from daily food service, these specialists also provide catering services for senior government officials, including admirals and even the President of the United States at the White House Mess. Their assignments balance between fleet units (about 60% of the time) and shore stations (about 40%), offering a dynamic and varied career path.

Training for Culinary Specialists begins with Recruit Training, followed by a seven-week A school at Fort Lee, Virginia. This training covers food preparation, nutrition, and dining service, equipping candidates with the necessary skills to excel in this role. As Culinary Specialists advance in their careers, they have access to advanced technical and operational training opportunities to continue their professional development. Educational advancement is also a focus within this rating; Culinary Specialists can earn college credits through the American Council on Education for courses taken and participate in degree programs offered by the United States Naval Community College, including a Naval Studies Certificate towards an associate degree. Additional voluntary education programs such as the Navy College Program, Tuition Assistance, and the Post-9/11 GI Bill support further studies while serving.

This role requires individuals to be good team players with strong interpersonal skills, creative abilities, and interests in nutrition and culinary arts. Successful candidates should have good arithmetic and verbal skills and the ability to perform detailed work while following instructions and maintaining accurate records. The job requires a military service contract as a commissioned officer in the Navy and is open to those legally authorized to work in the United States and 18 years or older. This career offers a stable and rewarding path within the government and military sectors, with excellent opportunities for placement and advancement for qualified applicants.
