Job Description

Federal Way Public Schools Nutrition Services is dedicated to providing healthy, nutritious meals to students across multiple schools within the district. As a vital component of the community, this public school district prioritizes adherence to national and state nutrition standards, ensuring each student receives meals that meet dietary regulations while fostering an environment of wellness and learning. The Nutrition Services Department operates within a framework that complies with the National School Lunch Program regulations and Department of Health requirements, aiming to serve meals that promote both academic and physical wellbeing. Employees in this department play a key role in supporting these nutritional goals and upholding the district's commitment to equitable and culturally competent service delivery. This service-oriented approach builds trust and positive relationships with students, families, and school staff while maintaining safety and sanitation standards in food preparation and service environments.

The role of the Central Kitchen Assistant 2 is integral to the daily operations of the central kitchen that supports the Federal Way Public Schools. This position involves working in various areas of the kitchen, including bakery, salad preparation, cooking, and general production. The assistant is responsible for preparing and assembling food into meal components or complete meals in a sanitary, safe, and efficient manner. This task includes following stringent regulations and protocols set forth by the National School Lunch Program, the Department of Health, and the Nutrition Services Department itself.

Central Kitchen Assistant 2s assist with all phases of food preparation, ensuring timely production that meets quality and safety expectations. They maintain cleanliness and general orderliness in the workspace during and after meal preparation. Their duties extend beyond food preparation to include loading serving units with the correct quantities of food, fulfilling special meal orders, and providing back-up assistance as needed—such as receiving lunch counts from schools or operating Point of Sale Systems within school environments.

This is a physically demanding role requiring frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting. Employees must be able to maneuver within a busy kitchen environment and handle food safely under varying temperature conditions, from freezers to hot cooking areas. The position requires compliance with food handling permits and adherence to dress codes and professional standards. Employment with Federal Way Public Schools Nutrition Services offers a supportive work environment with a consistent schedule of 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday across the academic year, along with competitive salary and benefits as outlined on the Public School Employees of Washington Salary Schedule.

By joining the Federal Way Public Schools Nutrition Services team as a Central Kitchen Assistant 2, you will be contributing to the nourishment and success of students while working within a collaborative team environment that values cultural competence, equity, and professional growth. This opportunity is suited for individuals with a strong commitment to food safety, customer service, teamwork, and quality food production in a school district setting.
