Airgas is currently hiring a CDL Class B Route Driver in Portsmouth, VA. This role is a vital part of the company’s distribution network, responsible for transporting, delivering, and unloading cylinders containing compressed gases and liquids between Airgas branches and plant locations. As a CDL Route Driver, you will play an essential role in customer and associate relations, representing Airgas with professionalism and ensuring service inquiries and issues are resolved efficiently. You will maintain accurate documentation such as load manifests and vehicle records, ensuring all transactions are balanced and compliant with safety regulations. Safety is paramount in this role, with responsibilities including pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and cylinders, adherence to all operational safety procedures, and immediate reporting of any accidents or injuries. Additionally, you will operate warehouse equipment such as pallet jacks and forklifts, supporting warehouse and dock operations when necessary.
Working outdoors in varying temperatures requires physical capability and resilience. The position expects candidates to handle physical tasks like lifting weights from 25 to over 100 pounds on occasion. Successful candidates will hold a valid Class A Driver's License, Hazmat Endorsement, and medical certification, with at least one year of recent Class A professional driving experience. Job Requirements
- Must have a valid Class A driver's license
- Valid medical examiner's card
- Must have the Hazmat endorsement
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must have one year of prior Class A professional driving experience within the last five years
- Successful completion of Airgas background and motor vehicle check
- DOT Clearinghouse verification from previous employers is required
- Ability to routinely lift or move around 25 to 75 lbs, and occasionally lift 76 to greater than 100 lbs
- Willingness to work outdoors in changing temperatures
- Ability to maintain a drug-free workplace
- Adherence to safety regulations and policies
- Flexible to work overtime as needed
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Forklift experience
- Prior experience in the gas, welding and safety supply industry preferred
- Valid Class A driver's license
- Valid medical examiner's card
- Hazmat endorsement
- Minimum one year of Class A professional driving experience within the last five years
Job Duties
- Safely load, deliver, and unload cylinders containing compressed gases and liquids between Airgas branches and plant locations
- Maintain accurate load manifests and vehicle documents, ensuring they are properly completed and balanced with truck counts and shipping documents
- Record all deliveries and pickups, and return empty cylinders for refilling
- Professionally interact with associates and customers to resolve service inquiries and issues
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, as well as cylinder inspections per operating procedures
- Ensure all safety rules are strictly observed and promptly report any accidents or injuries to management
- Provide timely updates to the manager regarding any operational changes or issues
- Operate pallet jacks, forklifts, and other warehouse equipment
- Work in the warehouse or on the dock as required
