Job Description

Upstate Medical University Shuttle Service in Syracuse, NY, is a reliable transportation provider catering specifically to hospital employees. This service is known for its commitment to safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction while ensuring smooth transit between the hospital and designated parking areas. Operated with a fleet of newer walk-on 24-passenger shuttles that are regularly cleaned and maintained, the Shuttle Service offers a dependable transit solution to hospital staff. Given the importance of timely and safe transport in a hospital environment, this service plays a crucial role in supporting the operations of Upstate Medical University by reducing parking congestion and providing convenient travel options for employees.

The Shuttle Driver position at Upstate Medical University Shuttle Service is currently open for both full-time and part-time roles, offering flexibility to accommodate different schedules. Drivers are primarily responsible for transporting hospital employees to and from their parking lots, serving local routes that are steady and consistent. This role requires availability for mornings and/or evening shifts, with potential for both straight and split shifts. Although the initial schedule demands flexibility, there is an opportunity for drivers to transition into more regular hours over time. This makes the position suitable for individuals seeking stable work with variable start times, including semi-retirees or those interested in part-time employment. However, candidates already employed full time as school bus drivers are advised that this opportunity is not suitable due to scheduling conflicts.

Compensation for Shuttle Drivers starts at $25 per hour with weekly pay, reflecting the important responsibilities and the need for reliable, skilled operators. The vehicles used are modern and comfortable, which supports a pleasant working environment. Additionally, full-time employees are eligible for health and dental insurance after 90 days with a 50/50 cost split between the employee and the employer. Paid vacation is offered after one year of service, providing further benefits for long-term team members. There is also room for career advancement within the organization, making this an attractive position for those seeking growth opportunities in a stable and reputable transit service.

Drivers must be over 20 years old and possess excellent customer service skills, as interacting politely and effectively with patrons forms a central aspect of the job. A valid New York State Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement is mandatory, alongside a valid medical card. Pre-employment requirements include background checks and a driving test to ensure candidates meet the regulatory safety standards expected in this role.

The Shuttle Driver role encompasses a range of duties aimed at maintaining high safety and operational standards. Drivers greet passengers courteously, assist them as needed, and ensure all activities comply with traffic laws and company policies. Key operational tasks include following radio communication protocols, completing vehicle pre-trip inspections, recording passenger and route data, and reporting any mechanical issues promptly. Drivers also help with equipment setup and breakdown, including signs and cones, to maintain organized and safe shuttle operations. Keeping the shuttle clean and removing debris regularly is also part of the daily routine to provide a neat and safe transport experience.

Upstate Medical University Shuttle Service values inclusion and is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds. This role provides a critical support function within the hospital environment, requiring dedication, attention to detail, and a strong customer focus. If you are looking for a flexible, supportive job with competitive pay and the opportunity to positively impact hospital staff’s daily commute, the Shuttle Driver position at Upstate Medical University is a great fit.
