Job Description
Performance Foodservice, the broadline distributor arm of Performance Food Group (PFG), operates as a vital partner to a diverse set of local customers including independent restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, schools, and quick-service eateries. The company supports its customers through a dedicated team consisting of sales representatives, chefs, consultants, and industry experts who work collaboratively to enhance client operations. This includes consulting on menu development, product selection, and overall operational strategies. Performance Foodservice is recognized for delivering quality food products and also plays a crucial role in the success of independent restaurant owners by helping them meet their business objectives. The company prides itself on fostering strong relationships and ensuring customer satisfaction through dependable service and expert advice.
The CDL-A Driver position at Performance Foodservice is essential to maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the food supply chain in the United States. This role demands professionalism, adherence to safety standards, and excellent customer service skills as drivers are the company’s representatives on the road. The position offers an average annual income of $80,000 or more, along with quarterly safety bonus opportunities. Employees work a five-day work schedule from Monday through Saturday with no work required on Sundays; however, days off may vary and flexibility is necessary. There is also the possibility of team routes and overnight layovers on certain assignments. Shifts generally span 10 hours and focus on ramp work, with dispatch times typically between midnight and five in the morning.
CDL-A Drivers are responsible for operating tractor-trailers or straight trucks across intrastate and interstate local routes, over-the-road deliveries, shuttle runs, and drive-and-drop assignments. Drivers deliver food and food-related products to customers following strict Department of Transportation regulations, ensuring all deliveries are completed safely, timely, and with professionalism.
This role requires frequent communication with customers, vendors, and coworkers to ensure all inquiries are handled accurately and promptly. Drivers perform mandatory safety inspections before and after trips in compliance with DOT regulations and company safety policies. They must also report any safety issues, potential hazards, or equipment repairs immediately. Responsibilities include verifying freight accuracy, securing cargo appropriately, managing delivery documentation, and sometimes collecting payments when necessary.
In addition to driving, CDL-A Drivers unload products and move items into customer storage areas. They also perform damage control checks, handle customer returns, and maintain cleanliness and organization of their equipment and loading dock areas. Accurate record keeping of hours of service and other logs in accordance with federal and state laws is mandatory. This position is ideal for individuals who are committed to safety, customer service, and operational efficiency within the food distribution industry.
