Job Description
ABF Freight, an ArcBest company, is one of the nation's largest and most trusted less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers. With over a century of experience in the transportation industry, ABF Freight has established a strong presence across North America, operating 240 service centers that deliver reliable, best-in-class LTL shipping solutions to businesses of all sizes and across various industries. The company is renowned for its unwavering commitment to quality, safety, and exceptional customer service, which has earned it a solid reputation and a loyal customer base. As part of ArcBest, a broader logistics and transportation services provider, ABF benefits from the resources and innovation that fuel its ongoing success and growth.
This particular role focuses on the pickup and delivery of cargo to and from various destinations, typically within the proximity of ABF Freight's consolidation and distribution centers. The position plays a critical role in ensuring cargo is handled efficiently and safely, aligned with company standards and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include the loading and unloading of trailers using techniques, technology, and procedures consistent with dock worker standards, potentially requiring operation of forklifts as needed. Employees are expected to exercise independent judgment when building or tearing down trailers, optimizing the use of time, resources, energy, and physical effort while adhering strictly to weight distribution laws.
The role entails varied duties that can include check-in procedures, vehicle inspection (tractor/trailer), tractor setup, and both cargo pickup and delivery. Candidates should be prepared for flexible schedules as duty and shift assignments may vary by terminal location, including potential day and night shifts or weekend work. The job requires diligent completion of routine paperwork, including accurate logging of loading sheets, to maintain operational efficiency and compliance. Successful candidates must meet certain educational, certification, and experience requirements, and demonstrate a safe, dependable work ethic as well as the ability to meet medical and drug screening standards set by the Department of Transportation (DOT). This hourly position offers competitive wages based on Teamster Union Scale, which typically exceeds many other carriers, and includes numerous benefits available exclusively to union employees. These benefits offer substantial value through health insurance with no employee premium, sick leave, paid holidays, life insurance, pension plans, profit-sharing programs, and retirement contribution opportunities such as the Teamsters National 401(k). ABF Freight thus not only prioritizes operational excellence but also the welfare and satisfaction of its team members, making this role ideal for those looking to advance their careers in the transportation sector within a stable, reputable company.
