Job Description
Performance Foodservice (PFG) is a leading broadline food distributor committed to serving a diverse clientele that includes independent restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, schools, and quick-service eateries. Known for its extensive product range and expert team consisting of sales representatives, chefs, consultants, and operational experts, PFG goes beyond mere food delivery by offering advisory services related to menu development, product selection, and operational strategies. This approach ensures independent restaurant owners and other food service operators not only receive quality products but also valuable support to optimize their business operations and succeed in a competitive market.
As a part of the PFG family, the company fosters an inclusive, respectful, and safe working environment. Emphasizing a culture of rewards and recognition, PFG offers employees attractive benefits starting from day one, including health and wellness coverage, a robust employee stock purchase plan, a 401K with employer matching, education assistance, paid time off, and other valuable perks. The company is also dedicated to equal employment opportunities, ensuring impartial hiring and workplace practices across a wide array of characteristics protected by law.
The Local Routes Driver Trainee role at PFG represents an exciting entry-level opportunity for individuals interested in launching a career in commercial driving within the food distribution industry. This position involves learning and gaining hands-on experience driving tractor trailers and straight trucks on intrastate and interstate routes, including local, over-the-road, shuttle, and overnight assignments. The schedule is Monday through Friday, offering the work-life balance benefit of being home daily, with early morning dispatch times.
Trainees receive competitive pay during the training phase, starting at $25.02 per hour, and are provided with essential safety equipment such as boots and protective gear, underscoring PFG’s commitment to employee safety and comfort. The role is designed to develop professional skills related to safely transporting and delivering food and related products while complying with all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company policies.
The training program includes participation in PFG’s comprehensive Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program. Successful completion of this program requires trainees to fully document and maintain training records, ride along with experienced driver trainers, and assist in executing deliveries. Trainees will learn to perform thorough vehicle safety inspections, manage freight counts, complete accurate paperwork, and handle delivery and unloading procedures professionally.
This position also demands strong customer service skills, as the driver trainee acts as a key representative of PFG when interacting with customers, vendors, and colleagues. Communication must be professional and courteous, adhering to the company’s preferred methods and practices. Trainees are expected to be adaptable team members, capable of performing additional duties as assigned to support efficient operations.
PFG places a strong emphasis on safety, requiring trainees to adhere to all DOT safety checks, report any hazards or equipment issues promptly, and maintain compliance with all regulations throughout their driving activities. Daily operational responsibilities extend beyond driving to include loading and unloading goods, managing returned products, conducting damage control checks, maintaining cleanliness in work areas, and logging hours of service accurately.
Performance Foodservice values growth and advancement. Successful driver trainees have the opportunity to progress within the company, benefiting from a supportive environment that encourages career development while performing essential work that underpins America’s food distribution infrastructure. This role is ideal for candidates who are motivated by safety, teamwork, customer service, and the potential for growth in a vital sector of the food supply chain.
