Job Description

Performance Foodservice, a division of Performance Food Group (PFG), stands as one of the nation’s leading broadline food distributors. The company prides itself on maintaining strong and unique relationships with a diverse customer base including independent restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, schools, and quick-service eateries. With a dedicated team comprising sales representatives, chefs, consultants, and other industry experts, Performance Foodservice offers more than just food products—it provides substantial support through operational advice, menu development, product selection guidance, and strategic consultation. The company’s commitment is rooted in a mission to help independent restaurant owners and other foodservice businesses thrive and succeed by delivering not just quality food, but also expert knowledge and customer-centric services. Their extensive offering and customer-first approach position them as a crucial partner in America’s food distribution and supply chain.

This entry-level Driver Trainee position at Performance Foodservice offers a vital opportunity for individuals seeking to build a career in commercial driving within the food distribution industry. The role involves comprehensive training and hands-on experience in driving tractor trailers or straight trucks on local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight routes, delivering food and related products to varied clients. With a competitive starting daily pay rate of $400 and a significant $2,500 sign-on bonus (terms apply), this role is attractive for those aiming to establish themselves as professional drivers. The schedule is typically Monday through Saturday, with 4 to 5 workdays weekly, encompassing local routes and occasional overnight assignments.

As a driver trainee, your primary responsibility is to learn and gain practical experience under the guidance of a driver trainer. You will participate in the PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Programs, ensuring all training documentation is accurately completed and maintained per company standards. Riding along with your trainer, you will assist in executing deliveries safely while following all instructions and directions meticulously. Maintaining compliance with all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations is paramount; this includes performing thorough safety inspections of trucks and trailers before and after trips, verifying freight loading, securing loads properly, and managing required paperwork associated with deliveries.

Interacting professionally with customers, vendors, and colleagues is an essential part of the role, reflecting PFG’s dedication to excellent customer service and teamwork. The driver trainee will also handle unloading of products and returns, perform damage control checks, and secure vehicles and freight at all times. Daily responsibilities include logging hours of service in accordance with federal, state, and company policies, completing general housekeeping duties in the tractor and loading areas, and participating actively in maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

Performance Foodservice offers a comprehensive benefits package starting from the first day of employment, including health and wellness benefits, an employee stock purchase plan, 401K employer matching, education assistance, paid time off, and numerous growth opportunities. Their inclusive, safe, and respectful workplace culture fosters recognition, rewards, and personal development, making this role not just a job but a step towards a rewarding professional journey within the food distribution sector. Overall, this position offers a solid foundation for candidates eager to excel in the logistics and transportation arm of the foodservice industry while enjoying substantial benefits and career advancement pathways.
