The role of Cashier/Stock at Au Bon Pain is a pivotal part of the café's daily operations. This position serves as the very first and last impression for guests entering and leaving the café, requiring a warm, friendly demeanor and strong customer service skills. Cashiers are stationed prominently at the front of the café where they greet customers, handle payments securely and efficiently, and manage the flow of foot traffic inside the store. Beyond the cashier duties, this role involves assisting in keeping the café fully stocked with bakery goods, refrigerated items, and impulse purchases, ensuring that inventory is visually appealing and readily available for the guests.

This hourly, non-exempt position reports directly to the General Manager or shift supervisors and is integral to maintaining a fast-paced yet friendly environment. The Cashier/Stock champion guest-first service by attentively listening to guest needs and responding promptly, upholding Au Bon Pain's standards for quality, safety, and sanitation. Working collaboratively with other team members, the Cashier/Stock helps keep work and dining areas clean, organized, and welcoming. This role also involves following strict cash handling policies, safeguarding the cash drawer, and accurately completing transactions using scanning systems or product codes.

Job Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Strong attention to detail and time management
  • Passion for quality, safety and sanitation
  • Excellent English reading, writing and speaking skills
  • Friendly attitude and team player
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions
  • Proactive and urgent demeanor
  • Ability to stand for up to 6 hours continuously
  • Ability to move around café to attend guests
  • Ability to lift and handle objects up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to position self to move items from floor to shelves

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Prior customer service experience advantageous
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Basic math skills for handling transactions
  • Knowledge of café products and services helpful
  • Friendly and approachable personality
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform light lifting

Job Duties

  • Complete transactions by scanning items, inputting product codes, processing cash and card payments
  • Ensure cash drawer security and balance adhering to cash handling policy
  • Provide excellent guest service by responding and resolving requests promptly
  • Stock bakery, refrigerated products, and impulse items
  • Maintain professionalism in interactions with guests and team members
  • Collaborate with team for efficient operations
  • Keep work area clean, organized and stocked
  • Resolve issues and inform management as necessary
  • Clean and maintain dining room
  • Assist with coffee service as needed
  • Perform additional related tasks as assigned
