Job Description
SpartanNash is a prominent member of the C&S Wholesale Grocers family of companies, operating as a comprehensive food solutions company dedicated to delivering the ingredients for a better life. Known for its extensive role as a distributor, wholesaler, and retailer, SpartanNash manages a global supply chain network that distributes grocery and household goods. Its product range includes fresh produce and the renowned Our Family® portfolio, ensuring availability across all 50 states. SpartanNash serves a diverse clientele that ranges from national accounts and independent grocers to chain grocers, e-commerce retailers, U.S. military commissaries and exchanges, and operates its own brick-and-mortar grocery stores, pharmacies, and fuel centers. The company’s vibrant and enthusiastic team spans various roles—bakery managers, order selectors, IT developers, vice presidents of finance, HR business partners, and export specialists—all contributing to creating braggingly happy customers through top-tier service and high-quality products.
The role of Cashier at SpartanNash is crucial in maintaining the company’s excellent customer service standards and operational efficiency. Located at 1603 Capital NE - Battle Creek, Michigan 49017, this position involves operating a cash register and electronic scanner to itemize and total customers' purchases accurately. The Cashier is responsible for processing various forms of payment, including cash, checks, credit cards, food stamps, WIC, loyalty cards, gift certificates, rain checks, voids, and coupons while adhering strictly to company policies. This position also entails assisting customers with bagging purchases courteously, ensuring a positive shopping experience. Beyond transaction processing, the Cashier will manage front-end merchandising duties such as displaying newspapers, periodicals, and candies while keeping an eye on proper product identification, PLUs, and pricing accuracy to report any discrepancies promptly.
Understanding and efficiently using check-stand equipment—registers, scanners, scales, and belts—is vital to success in this role. The Cashier is expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge of store programs, in-store specials, loyalty promotions, and coupons to effectively communicate these benefits to customers and promote a customer-oriented store environment. Security, cash handling, product handling, and compliance with regulations on alcohol and tobacco sales are integral parts of the responsibilities. The role also requires maintaining cleanliness and stock in the department, adhering to safety and sanitation standards, and possibly assisting with stocking items. Following all PPE, safety, food safety, cleaning expectations, and guest experience guidelines is mandatory. This foundational role supports the SpartanNash commitment to a People First culture, fostering associate development, effective communication, and an inclusive workplace. SpartanNash is also an Equal Opportunity Employer, dedicated to diversity and supporting veterans and individuals with disabilities. While the company offers a competitive Total Rewards benefits package, it is important to note that visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
