The cashier position at SpartanNash is an exciting role pivotal to ensure a smooth, efficient, and customer-focused checkout experience. Located at 8503 Davison in Davison, Michigan, this position involves operating the cash register and electronic scanner to itemize and total customers’ purchases accurately. The role extends beyond simple transactional activities, as it requires the cashier to assist in bagging purchases while providing courteous and friendly customer service. As a cashier, you will handle a diverse range of products such as dry groceries, frozen foods, dairy, produce, poultry, fish, beef, and pork items. Your responsibilities will include processing various types of payments, from cash and credit cards to food stamps, WIC, loyalty cards, and coupons, all in accordance with company policies. Additionally, you will be expected to manage front-end duties such as merchandising newspapers, periodicals, and candy at the checkout stand.
In this role, adherence to company procedures for cash handling, product pricing, and sales of age-restricted products like alcohol and tobacco is critical. You will also maintain a clean and organized department while complying with safety and sanitation guidelines. The cashier may occasionally assist with stocking items or be assigned tasks in other departments to support the overall customer experience. This position highlights SpartanNash’s commitment to safety by requiring strict observance of personal protective equipment (PPE), food safety, and cleaning protocols.
Physically, the role requires standing and walking for extended periods and being able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally with some bending, stooping, twisting, and turning. The cashier works in a typical retail environment where temperature and noise levels may vary. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- One year of prior retail or related experience preferred
- Good verbal communication skills
- Ability to interact politely and effectively with customers

Job Duties
- Operate cash register and electronic scanner to itemize customer purchases
- Process financial transactions including cash, checks, credit cards, food stamps, WIC, loyalty cards, gift certificates, rain checks, voids, and coupons
- Weigh and carefully bag customer purchases
- Understand use of check-stand equipment such as register, scanner, scale, belts and operate efficiently
- Responsible for front-end duties such as merchandising newspapers, periodicals, candy
- Ensure proper use of product identification and corresponding PLUs and report errors in pricing or signage
- Maintain understanding of current store programs and product locations
- Communicate company programs, in-store specials and coupons to customers and model high standards of service
- Comply with company policies regarding security, cash handling, product handling, sale of alcohol and tobacco products
- Maintain a clean and well-stocked department complying with safety and sanitation procedures
- May assist with stocking items
- Follow all PPE and safety guidelines
- Follow all food safety and cleaning expectations
- Follow guest experience guidelines
- May be assigned tasks in other departments based on customer experience needs
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed
