The role of Cashier/Checker at Smith's Food and Drug is a vital position that directly impacts the customer experience. Individuals hired for this role are expected to be visible, engaging, and proactive in assisting customers to ensure a smooth and positive shopping experience. The Cashier/Checker is responsible for accurately processing customer transactions using the Point of Sale (POS) system, managing various payment methods including cash, checks, credit, debit, SNAP EBT, WIC, and handling complex loyalty offers and coupons with precision and efficiency. This assistance extends beyond transactions, as the Cashier/Checker must also maintain adherence to company policies regarding restricted sales items such as alcohol and tobacco.

Additionally, this position requires maintaining a safe and clean environment within the store, actively supporting safety programs, conducting preventive equipment maintenance checks, and reporting any discrepancies or safety concerns to management. The ability to manage conflicts calmly and with integrity, operate under legal and company guidelines, and support diverse populations including minors and individuals with special needs are all essential components of this role. Job Duties

  • Greet and engage customers actively

  • Report pricing discrepancies and follow procedures for stamps, gift cards, and coupons
  • Stay updated with current and seasonal promotions and ads
  • Maintain food safety and store safety procedures
  • Conduct preventive maintenance checks and report equipment issues
  • Create a welcoming environment by assisting customers with product inquiries
  • Comply with local, state, and federal laws and company guidelines
  • Manage conflict in a nonconfrontational manner
  • Act honestly and with integrity regarding customer and business information
  • Provide assistance to minors, individuals with special needs, and older adults
