Job Description
SpartanNash, a proud member of the C&S Wholesale Grocers family, is a comprehensive food solutions company that delivers essential ingredients for a better life. As a leading distributor, wholesaler, and retailer, SpartanNash operates a sophisticated global supply chain network that distributes grocery and household goods to all 50 states in the US. These product offerings include fresh produce and the Our Family portfolio, which exemplify the company’s commitment to quality and community. SpartanNash’s team is notably diverse and includes bakery managers, order selectors, IT developers, finance vice presidents, HR business partners, export specialists, and many more who dedicate their efforts to creating braggingly happy customers. These customers range from national accounts and independent grocers to e-commerce retailers, U.S. military commissaries and exchanges, and SpartanNash’s brick-and-mortar grocery stores, pharmacies, and fuel centers.
The cashiering position at SpartanNash, based at 3103 Yorktown Drive in Bismarck, North Dakota, is a pivotal front-end role responsible for delivering excellent customer service and managing the financial transactions that facilitate daily retail operations. The cashier operates the cash register and electronic scanners to itemize and total customer purchases accurately and efficiently. This role requires handling a wide variety of products, including dry groceries, frozen foods, dairy products, produce, poultry, fish, beef, and pork. The cashier is responsible for processing diverse payment methods, such as cash, checks, credit cards, food stamps, WIC, loyalty cards, gift certificates, rain checks, voids, and coupons, all while ensuring compliance with company policies regarding cash handling and security.
Beyond transaction processing, the cashier is tasked with bagging customer purchases thoughtfully and maintaining an organized and well-stocked front-end area. Duties include merchandising check-stand items, ensuring accurate product identification, pricing, and signage, and staying informed about current store programs, product locations, loyalty schemes, and in-store specials. The role demands adherence to safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), food safety, and cleaning procedures. Additionally, cashiers must model high standards of customer service to support a welcoming, customer-oriented store environment.
Physical requirements for the position include the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds frequently, with occasional lifts of up to 50 pounds. The position involves extended periods of standing and walking, as well as bending, stooping, twisting, and turning. Employees must be prepared to work in a typical retail environment with variable temperatures and some exposure to outdoor weather conditions. SpartanNash fosters a People First culture and offers a comprehensive total rewards benefits package that aims to support, reward, and develop its employees. The company emphasizes equal opportunity employment, accessible workplaces for people with disabilities, and support for veterans. However, it does not sponsor work visas for this role. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who enjoy a dynamic retail environment and seek to contribute to a well-respected food solutions company dedicated to community, diversity, and customer satisfaction.
