Job Description

The Cashier role at SpartanNash is essential to the smooth operation of the retail environment and directly contributes to creating positive customer experiences. Located at 6700 W. State St., Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, this position involves operating the cash register and electronic scanner to itemize and total customers' purchases, processing a variety of payment methods, and assisting customers with bagging their purchases. The role requires excellent customer service skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle transactions efficiently and accurately. Cashiers serve as the front-line representatives of the company, ensuring that every customer interaction is positive by adhering to company policies and maintaining a well-organized and clean checkout area.
In this role, cashiers are responsible for managing transactions involving cash, checks, credit cards, food stamps, WIC benefits, loyalty cards, gift certificates, and coupons, operating check-stand equipment such as registers, scanners, scales, and belts. They are also tasked with merchandising activities at the check-stands, including newspapers, periodicals, and candy, and are expected to keep abreast of current store programs, product locations, and company promotions to effectively assist customers. Strict compliance with company regulations regarding security, cash handling, and product handling, including the sale of alcohol and tobacco products, is mandatory.
Physical demands include standing and walking for extended periods, occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, and exposure to varying store environments. Job Requirements

- one year of prior retail or related experience preferred
- good verbal communication skills

Job Duties
- Operate cash register and electronic scanner to itemize customer purchases
- handle a variety of products including dry groceries, frozen foods, dairy, produce, poultry, fish, beef, and pork
- process financial transactions such as cash, checks, credit cards, food stamps, WIC, loyalty cards, gift certificates, rain checks, voids, and coupons accurately
- weigh and bag customer purchases carefully
- understand and efficiently use check-stand equipment including register, scanner, scale, and belts
- perform front-end duties such as merchandising check-stand items like newspapers, periodicals, and candy
- ensure correct product identification and pricing, reporting errors
- maintain knowledge of current store programs and product locations
- communicate company programs, in-store specials, and coupons to customers
- comply with company policies regarding security, cash handling, product handling, sale of alcohol and tobacco
- maintain clean and well-stocked department following safety and sanitation standards
- assist with stocking items when needed
- follow all PPE and safety guidelines
- adhere to food safety and cleaning expectations
- follow guest experience guidelines
- perform tasks in other departments as assigned
- complete additional responsibilities as required
