Job Description

Kroger, originating from a small Cincinnati grocery store over a century ago, has grown to become the largest grocer in the United States. Today, Kroger operates nearly 2,800 stores across 35 states under 28 different brand names, solidifying its place as a leader in the retail grocery industry. With a commitment to bringing together diverse teams passionate about food and people, Kroger's mission, "To Feed the Human Spirit," reflects its dedication to more than just grocery retail — it is about creating meaningful experiences for customers, communities, and employees alike. The company prides itself on its history of innovation, consistently working to enhance the shopping experience through quality products, exceptional service, and community engagement.

At Kroger, people truly matter. The company recognizes that its associates are the foundation of its success and strives to provide an environment where employees can thrive, both professionally and personally. As part of the Kroger family, associates are offered the ingredients they need to create a recipe for success, whether they are seeking part-time roles or full career paths in an inclusive and supportive workplace.

The role of a Cashier/Checker at Kroger is an integral part of the customer experience. This position is centered around delivering outstanding service by being visible, actively greeting, engaging with, and assisting customers throughout their shopping journey. Cashiers process customer transactions quickly, accurately, and efficiently, utilizing the Point of Sale (POS) system to handle various types of payments including cash, checks, credit, debit, SNAP EBT, WIC, coupons, and loyalty offers according to company policies. They must have a solid understanding of cash control procedures and adhere to guidelines regarding sales of restricted items such as alcohol and tobacco.

Beyond transactional duties, Cashiers at Kroger ensure the safety and cleanliness of their environment, adhering to food safety regulations and company safety programs. They contribute to loss prevention by managing cash shortages or overages honestly and effectively. Additionally, they play a cooperative role in maintaining store operations by reporting equipment malfunctions and pricing discrepancies and staying current with promotions and advertisements.

This position demands excellent communication skills, the ability to manage conflicts professionally, and the capacity to work effectively in fast-paced, sometimes stressful environments. Cashiers are expected to act with integrity regarding customer and business information and always follow directions while seeking assistance as needed to resolve issues. The role also emphasizes empathy and support by directly assisting minors, individuals with special needs, and older adults, creating a welcoming and inclusive store atmosphere.

As part of Kroger's commitment to its associates, the company offers comprehensive benefits that support physical, emotional, and financial well-being. Associates have access to a wide range of healthcare coverage options including medical, dental, vision, and prescription plans. Flexible scheduling is available in both part-time and full-time roles, with paid holidays and sick leave based on eligibility and tenure. Emotional and financial support services are provided through an Employee Assistance Program and confidential financial coaching. Employees also enjoy valuable discounts on a variety of products and services and have opportunities for career advancement through industry-leading training programs and tuition reimbursement up to $21,000 over their careers.

Joining Kroger means becoming part of a values-driven company that embraces respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety. It is a place where your potential is limitless and your contributions matter. Apply today to join the Kroger family and become part of a mission that goes beyond groceries — a mission to feed the human spirit.
