The role of Retail Associate at G&M is a full-time hourly position reporting directly to the Store Manager. While it is not a managerial role, this position is pivotal in supporting small team functions and enhancing the overall store environment. The Retail Associate is responsible for delivering remarkable customer service in adherence to the company's corporate policies and guidelines. Candidates will be expected to efficiently multitask while contributing to an atmosphere that is friendly, safe, and clean. This includes operating the point-of-sale systems accurately to handle cash and fuel transactions and performing a variety of essential service functions, such as processing credit card payments, redeeming coupons, vendor check-ins, and managing restricted product sales including alcohol and tobacco, all in compliance with legal and corporate standards.
Additionally, Retail Associates actively engage in promotional campaigns and practice suggestive selling to boost sales while nurturing customer relations. They maintain store quality by adhering to city, county, state, and federal laws regarding store operations and safety. Employees are held to high standards of personal appearance, consistently wearing company uniforms and name tags. Responsibilities extend to food preparation tasks, including brewing fresh coffee, maintaining condiment bars, and ensuring the availability of fresh food items.
Maintaining store cleanliness both inside and out is critical to the role. Associates are tasked with cleaning duties such as mopping, sweeping, sanitizing surfaces and equipment, restocking merchandise including sensitive food products, and conducting daily inspections for freshness and proper rotation. This role also involves receiving and organizing vendor deliveries using proper lifting techniques to ensure product quality and stock availability. Additional responsibilities include managing trash removal, restocking, and monitoring restrooms to uphold the store’s welcoming ambiance.
The position requires familiarity with safety protocols, including robbery and violence prevention and emergency procedures. It demands flexibility with open availability to work various shifts as well as the capability to substitute at other district stores. Physical demands are significant, requiring the ability to stand or walk for extended periods, lift heavy items, and perform repetitive physical motions. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Experience with POS systems preferred
- Strong customer service skills
- Good interpersonal communication
- Ability to learn quickly with minimal supervision
- Basic strong math skills
- Food Handlers Permit if required by store/county
- English communication skills
- Flexibility to work various shifts including nights and weekends
- Physical ability to stand and walk for entire shifts
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Capacity to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and use arms for physical tasks
- Ability to push and pull up to 20 pounds
- Hand-eye coordination and bilateral hand coordination
Job Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Excellent computer skills including competency in PDI Enterprise POS
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to learn simple tasks quickly and work with little or no supervision
- Basic math skills
- Food Handlers Permit if required
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English
- Open availability to work all shifts and at multiple store locations if needed
Job Duties
- Take measures to preserve safety of employees and others in the work location
- Operate POS precisely and accurately manage payments
- Enter all transactions, accept payments, and account for all funds
- Perform service transactions including credit, coupons, vendor check-in, alcohol, tobacco, lottery and fast-food sales
- Check identification for controlled products per policy
- Participate in sales promotions and campaigns
- Practice suggestive selling and build customer relations
- Review and adhere to laws affecting store operations
- Maintain neat personal appearance and wear uniform
- Prepare hot food items and maintain food service areas
- Ensure store cleanliness inside and out
- Sweep and mop floors and clean spills
- Clean Fuel Delivery area and pumps
- Restock restrooms and perform regular cleaning duties
- Front face cooler and dust merchandise
- Clean windows and organize backroom
- Receive and stock vendor deliveries
- Wipe down counters, food warmers and microwaves
- Conduct daily inspections of perishables for freshness and rotation
- Follow company safety and emergency procedures
- Act as Barista backup including coffee brewing and food monitoring
- Perform deep cleaning duties during night shift
- Prepare for morning rush by ensuring supplies are ready
