Located in Bakersfield, California, the university provides a welcoming environment that embraces diversity and offers resources that help students thrive both academically and socially.
This full-time, on-site position within CSUB's Business and Administrative Services department, especially the Student Financial Services (SFS) unit, is integral to maintaining efficient financial operations related to student and university accounts. The role titled Accounting Technician I functions within the Cashier's Office, a key area responsible for handling all remittances to the university and its auxiliary business units. This includes managing student and non-student accounts receivable. The position operates under the direction of the Director of Accounting and Reporting and the Lead Cashier, performing well-established cashiering and bookkeeping duties.
The Cashier position requires the individual to manage monetary transactions with a high level of accuracy and integrity. It involves receiving payments, making change, issuing receipts, preparing bank deposits, handling petty cash, and reconciling cash drawers while identifying discrepancies. The role entails interacting directly with students and staff at the cashiering window and via telephone to provide excellent customer service, including answering inquiries related to cashiering functions and directing patrons to appropriate campus resources.
Moreover, the position requires familiarity with various financial software systems, including PeopleSoft Student Finance and CASHNet, to post transactions promptly and maintain accurate records. Core responsibilities also encompass generating reports, preparing spreadsheets, and performing administrative duties such as photocopying and scanning documents. This role demands a high level of professionalism, adherence to policies and procedures, and the ability to maintain confidentiality while managing sensitive financial information.
To succeed as an Accounting Technician I, candidates need strong skills in mathematics, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to operate various office technologies and financial record-keeping systems. The ideal candidate should demonstrate flexibility to meet fluctuating demands, possess keen problem-solving abilities, and exhibit outstanding customer service skills. Experience in educational or financial institutions, particularly in cashier or teller roles, is preferred.
Regarding compensation, this position offers a monthly salary in the anticipated hiring range from $3,738 to $3,967, commensurate with experience and qualifications, with the full CSU classification salary range extending up to $5,466 per month. Working at CSUB also means eligibility for a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision plans, retirement through CalPERS, a CSU tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave, paid holidays, and more. This role is designated as sensitive, reflecting the responsibility to handle financial operations and maintain the security of university funds.
Employment at CSUB requires compliance with various policies including background checks and adherence to nondiscrimination principles, ensuring a respectful and equitable working environment. This opportunity is currently open only to current on-campus employees, emphasizing the university's commitment to internal career advancement. Joining CSUB means becoming part of a community that values integrity, professionalism, and inclusiveness while contributing to the financial stewardship that supports the academic mission of the university.
