Job Description
Kroger is America’s largest supermarket chain and the nation’s top retailer of fresh foods, with nearly 2,800 stores across 35 states under 28 diverse brand names. With humble beginnings as a tiny grocery store in Cincinnati over a century ago, Kroger has grown into a household name synonymous with quality, variety, and community presence. Kroger's commitment centers on feeding the human spirit by bringing together diverse teams who are passionate about food and people, creating unique shopping experiences and fostering a welcoming atmosphere for customers and associates alike.
Kroger values its employees as the cornerstone of its success. The company emphasizes core values including respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety for all. These principles guide all aspects of the business, from customer interactions to workplace culture. Kroger is dedicated to supporting associate well-being by offering comprehensive benefits that address physical, emotional, and financial health. This caring culture makes Kroger not just a place to work, but a community where employees can grow personally and professionally.
The Cashier/Checker role at Kroger is a critical position focused on creating an outstanding customer experience through exceptional service. As the first point of contact, cashiers interact directly with customers, ensuring their shopping process is seamless, efficient, and pleasant. This role entails not only processing transactions quickly and accurately but also assisting customers with inquiries and reinforcing safety and operational standards. Cashiers contribute to maintaining a safe and clean environment that encourages customers to return, reflecting Kroger's commitment to quality and customer care.
This position requires knowledge and use of the Point of Sale (POS) system to handle various types of tenders, such as cash, credit, debit, SNAP EBT, and coupons. The cashier must adhere to company policies regarding age-restricted items, control loss through honesty and accuracy, and report pricing discrepancies appropriately. In addition to transactional responsibilities, cashiers help ensure food safety compliance and participate in safety programs by identifying hazards and reporting incidents. They maintain equipment by performing preventive maintenance checks and communicate effectively with management to resolve issues.
The ideal candidate for this role possesses strong customer service skills, effective communication, and basic math proficiency. Prior experience as a bagger, courtesy clerk, or in another customer service role is a plus but not mandatory. The position offers flexible scheduling options, suitable for part-time or career-seeking applicants. Kroger’s extensive training programs and career pathways provide vast potential for professional growth.
Kroger invests in its people not only through benefits but also through tuition reimbursement and ongoing development opportunities. Employees can receive up to $21,000 in tuition assistance, access free counseling and financial coaching, and enjoy valuable discounts on various goods and services. This holistic approach to employee well-being makes Kroger an exceptional employer for individuals looking to build a meaningful career while positively impacting their communities.
